Post by Anan » Wed, 24 Jul 2002 15:34:44

Hi

I am trying to configure my DVD rom drive on redhat linux 7.3. I dont
know the default device for DVD. Please give some information on it or the
major.minor device numbers so I can create it in /dev.

Thanks

Anand

Watch the screen when you boot. It should say something like this:

hda Maxtor harddrive
hdb Seagate haddrive
hdc TDK CD-RW
hdd HP DVD Player

And there you have it.

hda is primary controller of first bus
hdb is secondary controller of first bus
hdc is primary controllor of second bus
hdd is secondary controller of second bus

If it's a scsi drive, it'll most likely be at scd0 or scd1

Eitehr way, you'll probably want to make a symlink at /dev/dvd pointing
to it

Finally, this is a very well-documented question, and could have been
easily answered at google.com.

you could do one of these to see if the machine sees it:

look for anything with dvd/cdrom stuff

you could show the group what your system may have already set up:

1. X, DvD, & RedHat 7.3

FYI:

I have a Radeon 7000, DVD-ROM, and RedHat 7.3 with standard install.  If you
are having problems with quality of DvD players, it is might not be X or
your player.  On my comp, RedHat automatically disabled my DVD-ROM dma.  I
had to enable it via

        /sbin/hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc
