Suitable SCSI CDROM, HD & ADAPTEC 1542C

Post by Ian Parkin (rgra » Thu, 29 Jul 1993 19:59:09

Hello there,

I am thinking of adding a few SCSI items to my existing IDE box, but cannot seem to
find any definitive and recent information on this.

I plan to use an Adaptec 1542C controller, a Fujitsu HD and a CDROM of some kind ( possibly a Toshiba ).

Also I may use the items for the ( I am now putting on my asbestos suit ) BSD OS as well as ( I am now putting on my second asbestos suit ) DOS. No flames on this as I am
over the age of 21 and am consenting to this of my own free will.

Does anyone have any recommendations for such pieces of kit ? Is it worth trying to
track down a 1542B board ?

Sorry to post this here instead of to a mailing list, but for some reason once you are
on a mailing list you are on it for life ! ( Is this the same as 'Once you have used Linux there is no going back' ? )

Please reply by email and I will summarise any answers I recieve.

My system has a Adaptec 1542C, Seagate 500Mb FAST SCSI II, and Phillips CD-ROM.
However, my CD-ROM isn't supported by linux presently (since it is IDE for one
thing), so I'd suggest you check out the hardware sheet on linux for your
CD-ROM (or in your case, the BSD hardware sheet).  The difference between 1542B
and C also has to do with the SCSI technology.  The 1542C supports FAST SCSI II
as well as standard SCSI.  Newer technology, mostly.  Luck.
