Exiting X-Windows back to text mode

Post by Chris Royl » Sat, 03 Apr 1993 17:17:45

I may have missed something in the docs, but I don't think so.

When I exit X-Windows, every second column of text is forced blank on the
old screen. Even printing and typing new things doesn't cure the problem. I
have tried to switch VCs, but they all have every second column missing too.
The only solution is to reboot.

I am using mono X-Windows on a Trident card that appears to have a TVGA9000
chip on it. I use 640x480 resolution with the clock settings in the default
Xconfig.mono file.

On a separate point, Why won't the colour driver recognise this board ?
It says the driver only supports TVGA8900...

Further more (relating to X-Windows and that video card and things) :

1. Will upgrading from 4 to 8 MB of RAM make a significant difference to
   X performance ?

2. How can I get my system to continue running terminals whilst I run
X (either from the command line or using xdm from rc.local) ?

3. If I put more memory on the video card, will this help the colour
   system to run better ?

Cheers.

This is usually caused by using an XFree version numbered lower than 1.2.
If it is not, please let me know (by E-Mail).

This too suggests a version < 1.2. Those versions did not support the
tvga9000 in colour.

(I'm not sure I fully understand this question.)
Remote logins will still be possible.
You can switch from behind the console to other VT's by the three key
CTRL-ALT-FN number combination.

If you have a tvga9000 with 256k, I think you won't be able to run colour at
all in the standard resolutions. (Since 640x480 > 256k)
If you have a tvga9000 with 512k, I think you won't be able to put more
memory on it. (If I'm wrong here, please let me know.)

I haven't found anything either...

I had the same problem with my TVGA8900c: After leaving Xmono, every 2nd
text column was missing. Now I use the color X and after exiting X-Window
_every_ column is left blank, i.e. I can't see anything....

Is there any possibility to fix that?

Yes, it will definitely!

You mean seriel terminals? They don't get affected when starting X.

Here upgrading from 512 to 1024KB helped.
