Linux on PS/ValuePoint

Post by Alexander Kourak » Fri, 15 Oct 1993 20:32:26

It seems that there are at least a few people who want to install
Linux on a ValuePoint (myself included). I don't have access to any
other Linux machines to attempt the fixes that some people have
recommended.
So it seems that it sure would be nice if someone created a
distribution of Linux that would install correctly on the
ValuePoints. I don't know if there are any such distributions, I've
only downloaded SLS.
The problem may be that the BIOS reports the machine as a
MicroChannel architecture, which it is not.
Whatever the case, there needs to be an easy way to install Linux
on my ValuePoint.

You should be able to install using the normal SLS boot disk, as long
as you know the translated geometry (cylinders, heads, sectors) of
your hard disk.

Boot the disk, and while "LILO" is printing, press ALT. You should then
immediately get the LILO boot menu.  Then (assuming your doing a
normal install), type

        ramdisk hd=<cylinders>,<heads>,<sectors>

and proceed. Doing this, I was able to install SLS with no problems.
(An IBM PS/1 model G72)

(fyi: some example geometries...
        Maxtor 7213     hd=683,16,38
        Maxtor 7345     hd=790,15,57
)

Note that this procedure doesn't work with either the TAMU or Slackware
distributions; I don't know why.

1. Linux on PS/Valuepoint

I cannot get Linux to recognize the hard drives on my PS/Valuepoint.  I am
running the standard Valuepoint controller and disk (Maxtor 212mb), but
Linux comes up with the following error message during the boot:

hda: no response (status=0x80)
hda: non-ide device CHS=21328/176/117
hda: Cannot handle disks with 176 physical heads

The error messages repeat with hdb.

Of course, when I try to 'fdisk /dev/hdb' it tells me 'Unable to open
/dev/hdb'.

Please help!
