Looks like your ISP is running PPP or another protocol
that doesn't produce readable output.  Check the PPP-HOWTO
in /usr/doc/HOWTO.

It's a file that comes with RedHat Linux.  The PPP-HOWTO also
exists in many other places.  http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/

Quote:> how do i open it?

cd /usr/doc/HOWTO; zcat PPP-HOWTO | less
works for me.

1. Getting on the Internet with Linux.

If you are using X, Linux's graphical user interface, then you can try
seyon.  If not, I've found the easiest way to make a connection is to
use dip.  Type dip -t into your prompt.  This dumps you into command
mode.  From there, the first thing you want to do is tell the program
where your modem is by typing "port" and the location of your modem:
/dev/modem (if you have the link set up), if not try cua1.  Next, type
in dial and the number you want to call.  Once it's done calling you can
type in term to get a terminal connection.  You can login in from there.

hint: type help at the dip prompt, it will show you a lot of commands
you can use.  Also take a look at the man pages.  If you aren't
connecting properly, try fooling with some of the settings.
