MPEG layer 3 encoding?

Hi,

does anybody know of any MPEG layer 3 *encoding* software that'll
run under Linux? I hate to reboot into win95 :)

Try looking at:

http://www.mpeg3.org

There's quite a bit of info and pointers to software there.

OK, so I assume you also know which packages those are and where to find'm? :)
Could you please give me a name for that? I've spend an hour or 2 searching
for encoders 2 days ago, and the only one for Linux I could come
up with was the fraunhofer l3enc, which is prettty could I think, at least
it's faster than mpegenc under win95 (in my testing, YMMV).

Um...please go to www.layer3.org and download X11AMP cause it's a REALLY
nice MP3 player that X has needed for a long time. Don't forget to
e-mail the guy(s) who are writing it, and tell them they are doing a
good job.

: Yes.

AFAIK, the MP3 compression Algorithm is Patented to Fraunhofer-iis they
have not realeased the source code, to l3enc.

I am also (so far unsuccessfully) looking for Linux mp3 encoders. The
problem about l3enc is, that the free version cannot encode with
128kbps but only up to 112kbps. Please let me know if you find
something useful.

Bye,

Unfortunately I have problems running x11amp. I have downloaded the
newest version, but when I try to run it it stops with an error
message. I don't remember the text, but it was something about an
illegal integer...? I did run it as root, so that's not the problem. I
use Suse Linux 5.0, Kernel 2.0.30. Any ideas?

Really nice answer but does not really help, does it?
OK. The ultimate info: There is a more or less free implementation of a mp3
encoder. This is the reference implementation from ISO. And since all ISO
stuff is not really free I don't know exactly how to handle this. But you
should look for a file called

  dist10.tar.gz

with your favourite search engine. The included "dist10/lsf/encoder/"
compiles cleanly for me and runs fine, though slow. But it works! It encodes
nearly anything you like (i.e. 128kBit or more) but as I said, it is slow.
Perhaps one can optimize it but I had no time to do so.
I am currently working on a free MP3 recorder frontend using this encoder
and several other utils ... perhaps I will finish a first version this
weekend ;) Let's see...

PS: If anyone could tell me about the status of dist10 I would be really
happy! (i.e. if it really free and if newer versions of the encoder
    exist.)

I have found this to produce noticably worse quality results than
l3enc.

Worse in what respect?
By now I have encoded several tracks and could not experience any difference
(any audible difference of course). Be sure to set the 'original' flag to
'yes' as it seems to have an influence to the result ;)

1. Linux Hardware Encode avi to mpeg

Hi!

Using dvgrab (great tool) I have ripped 20 mini-dv tapes to numerous
avi files on my hard drive.  I now want to encode them to mpeg2 (their
ultimate destination will be DVD).

I want to do this encoding as quickly as possible and guess that it'd
take a few days, possibly a couple of weeks, to encode 300Gb of video
on my pc.

So, is it possible to use the hardware encoder in a Hauppauge PVR 350
to reduce this timescale?

Cheers
