Pine can be patched. I don't remember, off hand, where I got the patches
from but if you follow the qmail mailing list I'm sure you'll get a hint
at where to the patched sources.

I really LIKE the simplicity of either pine or elm (prefer elm),
but for a variety of reasons prefer to use a maildir spool.

Look for mutt also - it supports maildir right out of the box!
