1. WHEREIS: Are there any whereis-like programs better than whereis?

Whereis does not seem to be able to look for manual pages and
executables along the specified environment variables, like "which"
does.  It seems to be a very limited program.  Is there something
better than whereis, like "which", but with the capabilities of
searching for manual pages etc.?

Thanks very much,
