(gtk) "/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy"

(gtk) "/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy"

Post by seth » Tue, 15 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I am experimenting with gtk programing,
trying some examples(hello.c kind of thing).

It compiles and runs fine, but the first thing
I get for standard output is "/dev/dsp: Device of resource busy".
(after that it runs fine, like it should)

I am playing xmms at the time and when I am not running xmms
 I dont get the error.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
my question is this: Can more than one program use /dev/dsp at once?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(more info): when I run fuser on /dev/dsp, It returns with
more than one PID. what gives?

Thanks, Seth King

You could use Eound (esd), a sound daemon. Mana programs, ie. xmms have
plugins for esd, other apps can connect to it (instead of /dev/dsp) if
started trough the wrapper (esddsp).

1. /dev/ttyS2 (/dev/cua2) reports "device or resource busy" on kernel 2.1.95

I have just upgraded my kernel from 2.1.77 to 2.1.95

I use isapnp tools to set the IRQ and I/O address of my modem, then
setserial
to tell the driver that /dev/ttyS2 is where it is.

This worked fine on 2.1.77 kernel but now I get the message that the
"device or resource busy", when I attempt to open it (with say, dip
or kermit). Nothing else is using the port.

What has changed between these two kernel releases that would cause
this?

(also tried /dev/cua2 (which is being 'deprecated') to the same
effect...
works on 2.1.77 and is busy on 2.1.95)

(remove the '__' before the address when replying please)
