/dev/sequencer and /dev/lp0

/dev/sequencer and /dev/lp0

Post by Anthony Classic » Sat, 28 Oct 2000 20:26:30

I am having two problems I cannot fix. I am using SuSE 6.4, with the KDE
installed and in use. 1) I can't get the parport drivers installed (to use
my tape drive thru the parallel port) because /dev/lp0 is "in use", and the
drivers can't grab it. I tried to stop the printer daemon (lpsched), but
that didn't help. What do I do?
2) When I try to play midis (with kmidi), it refuses, saying that
"/dev/sequencer is in use by another program", yet no midi's are playing. No
sound at all, except when I play mp3's, which play just fine (so I know the
sound card and its drivers are working ok). I can't find any programs or
drivers running which would grab /dev/sequencer.

Any ideas?

Use lsof (as root) to know which programs are using a device
lsof /dev/sequencer

OK. I did and lsof didn't find anyone. What now?

1. ls > /dev/lp0 fails--but /dev/lp0 exists

I'm new to Linux.  I just loaded the Slackware distribution onto Swan 386SX,
386DX/25 and 486DX.  I have the same problem on all of them:

ls > /dev/lp0 gives:
    bash: /dev/lp0: no such device.

ls -al /dev/lp0 gives:
   crw-rw----  1  root  lp   6,  0  Nov 30 14:30  /dev/lp0

Nothing prints.

All these machines print fine on lpt1: under DOS.  I've read the
print HOWTO and "Linux Installation and Getting Started."   On the 386SX,
uname -a gives:
    Linux alinux 1.0 #9 Tue Mar 15 18:27:34 CST 1994  i386

I'd appreciate any help you can give.
