Make and libc-5.4.44

Make and libc-5.4.44

Post by John E. Garrot » Wed, 11 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I just upgraded to libc-5.4.44 (binary distribution
from sunsite).  Everything seems to work, exept
make is broken.  Whenever I try it, I get:
 "Memory fault (core dumped)".

The following was obtained when I looked at the
core:

 "GDB 4.16 (i486-slackware-linux),
Copyright 1996 Free Software Foundation, Inc...
Core was generated by `make'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
Reading symbols from /lib/libc.so.5...done.
Reading symbols from /lib/ld-linux.so.1...done.
#0  0x8004096 in sigprocmask ()
(xxgdb) Function "main" not defined."

I tried reinstalling the previous libc-5.4.38,
to no avail.  Could someone give me a clue?
I've tried everything I know to resolve this,
including a dejanews and yahoo search.

Thanks,

John

Sorry , but RTFM !!!!!!!!!!
in release.libc-5.4.44 H.J. writes at the beginning:

  5. If your make doesn't work anymore, please get the latst GNU make
from ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu. In the mean time, a working
GNU make binary is provided as make-3.75.tar.gz. You can use it to
  build the new one.

remember to read the release notes first!

bye,

You have first to find the FM to be able to do this.

The announcment in comp.os.linux.announce contained only this:

| DISTRIBUTION FILES:
|
| 1.      libc-5.4.44.bin.tar.gz
| 2.      libc-5.4.44.tar.gz
| 3.      libc-5.4.38-5.4.44.diff.gz

but the release* files were not mentioned. They weren't included in
libc-5.4.44.bin.tar.gz either. Usually there are some files like NEWS or
README or something like that *included in the tar file* if there is
something noteworthy. Since nothing like this was included in the binary
distribution, I (and most likely others as well) assumed that this was
only a bug fix release and not a bug introducing release.

I wonder which other programs are also affected by this change and have to
be changed... I think I'm staying with 5.4.38.

AFAIK GNU make is the only one.  The problem was GNU make had a bug, in
that it was relying on a bug in libc.  I don't think any other apps had
this bug (or at least I've never seen anyone report other apps with this
bug).

1. libc 4.44

I downloaded a program made for linux and ran it, but it failed and gave me
this error message: can't load dynamic linker '/lib/ld.so.  I read the
readme and it said that I need libc 4.44 in order for this to run.  I looked
in sunsite but couldn't find it.  What's it under?  What compressed name?
