Raytracer project - Anyone want to help?

Post by Paul Richard » Fri, 14 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi,
I'm going to try and make a raytracer but before I start I was wondering
if anyone would be interested in working on it with me?

I'm only doing it so that I can learn more so the program will be open
source.  If anyone else would like to learn from it then please contact
me by email.

Afterthought: is this a bit off topic?

Doesn't Povray do that?

Not as far as I am aware.

Hi,
No one seems interested, what about if I tell you that I'll do all the
maths?  Does that make the offer more tempting?  <grin>

it is not that i'm not interested.
I don't have time :-(
I have my own reasons for wanting to learn to do the same.
I am curious would this be a variation of POV, RIB, or a whole new
interface/standard?
There are a few things i'd like to do that pov can't seem to do.
and althought i think that a procedural shader (for bmrt) could do them,
one does not yet exist.

I would like to hear form you as your project progresses.

please don't get discouraged by the lack of voices.
personally i work better with silence.

phrostie.

We may write a POV-Ray file parser but it's not planned.

What's a procedural shader?

OK, well if you go to www.onelist.com/communities/raytrace you can
subscribe to our mailing list.  That'll bring the total up to 3!!!

Hehe, yeah, I'm used to it.

Quote:> What's a procedural shader?

its a program that tells the render/raytracer what a surface looks like.
it can be as simple as applying a rastor image to a surface or as
complex as creating a displacement.
it will also describe light, atmosphere, , ,
check the renderman repository for a better explanation
http://www.renderman.org/RMR/

it's a little harder to learn but worth the effort.

What i was hoping to try was to make a mirror(reflection) shader
and a lens(Refractor) shader. The mirror would be the easier of the two.
it would create a light souce at the point of contact where a previous
light source hit.  the new light would have same orign but the opposite
angle of incedence or some thing like that.

i'm convinced that it can be done i just have not had the time to pursue
it.

althought both povray and bmrt have raytracing in one form or an other,
i can not model a test stand that would show a beam of light(colored)
going through a path of mirrors and prisms.  what started this was when
a friend asked me to test different types of test equipment used to
gauge the quality of home ground mirrors(telescope).

there is a method that i beleive is called a knife blade test.  the idea
was to try variation on it with out the expense of building multipule
test stands.

1. HELP WANTED: Open Source Consultant Programmer wanted for quick project

HELP WANTED: Open Source Consultant Programmer wanted for quick project

We are in need of someone to quickly develop a new web project.

You will need to be an expert on setting up Apache Web Server on a Linux
system and in designing an online data base using Postgresql or MySQL.
HTML required, PHP probably required, Java & Java Script may or may not be
required.

You will be totally responsible for taking this rough idea and implementing
a working, fully scalable website.

Initial design will be two load shared Linux boxes running Apache on the
front end and one Linux box running Postgresql or MySQL on the back end.

The site will be co-located at a broadband ISP's facility so complete remote
admin will be required, including a daily data dump from the web server to
the admin system.

This is not a giant bucks project right now, but it could turn in to one.

We are located in central Florida and would prefer someone in this area but
it is not an absolute requirement.

All code will be our property meaning we can not pay for code to be
developed and licensed to us.

Development cycle is 8 to 12 weeks, so you need to know your stuff. No time
for learning curve on this one.

This is a very interesting project.

If you are a serious candidate with the required skill set, please send your

tmb

PS, If you are a shop and your rates are salary + overhead + margin you are
probably not what we are looking for.
