I have downloaded xanim from sunsite and tried it but the Readme files
tell me that it can read fli, flc, gif, etc. but not avi.  Or is there a
certin version or commands.  I could not find any.

Try the Xanim home page. http://www.veryComputer.com/~podlipec/home.html

Newer versions support AVI files. I think there are still some things
in AVI that aren't supported yet but more and more gets added each
version. You'll have to edit the Imakefile to have it have the linux
options enabled when you compile. After that it compiles with no
problem. I just compiled the experimental version that was put out a
few days ago and I haven't had any problems. There is still a
non-experimental one out though. You can also ftp it from the same
machines but I can't remember from where exactly. The ftp location is
* off the home page.

It'll handle avi files.  Just be sure there is enough memory available to
read it all (the avi file that is) into memory or use the +f (?)
option to xanim to tell it to be nice to your memory.

I think xanim-* (or something like that) does this. It's
not specifically for openwin, though...

If you have it, it's on UNIX USER LibCD Vol. 16. Don't despair
if you don't though.
