The next PegaSoft dinner meeting is Thursday, January 16, 2003-
7:00-9:00pm at Swiss Chalet - 234 Bloor Street W. in Toronto, Canada.
This is our Year in Review meeting where we will be looking at the
trends and future prospects of Linux.  Email me to reserve your seat.

  Looking Ahead to 2003

Issue #1: Internet: Future of fast cheap Internet in Canada.  High-speed
Internet has been called "dead" in the U.S.  With rising prices, a slow
economy and broadband services like Napster being sued out of business,
is it time to dust off the old 56K bps modem?

Issue #2: Linux: What does Linux have in store for 2003?  In 2002, the
2.4 kernel was called "painful". MS dropped the FUD campaign but
insisted that it is cheaper than Linux.  Linux on embedded devices was
over-hyped.   Major layoffs and shakeups at Linux companies.  Where does
Linux go from here?

Issue #3: Industry: Robert X. Cringely predicts Linux will force
Microsoft to improve its quality during 2003.  In 2002, Bill Gates
announced a quality initiative.  After the problems with the 2.4 kernel
and the lack of a decent desktop because of its reliance on outdated X
Windows, is Cringely out to lunch?  Cringely predicts the slow death of
HP/Compaq.

Issue #4: Privacy and Copyright: Cringely also predicts that a new
series of file swapping services will arise using new technologies to
circumvent the current laws.  In particular, peer-to-peer will be
replaced by "swarm computing", dividing the processing power and the
files into small pieces so that the RIAA can't determine what
constitutes piracy.

Issue #5: Computing in Canada:  Canada has one of the largest
concentrations of Linux developers in the world, but they are not
organized and there are few Linux initiatives.  Even L. was chosen as
one of the top newsmakers according to ITbusiness.ca for his LPI
certifications.  What's up for 2003?
