Tape backup/restore utilities

Post by u.. » Tue, 02 May 1995 04:00:00

Hi,
Is there any programs/utilities that will make tabe backups and restores
easier to handle? How do I figure out how much space is left on the tape?
Right now I use tbackup and mt to backup and reposition the tape. What
are the tob scripts and where can I get them?
Thanks for your help.

Once upon a time I heard of dump and restore for linux, but when I
went searching at sunsite, I did not find them.  There are plenty of
backup tools, but non like dump and restore, as far as I could see. Am
I wrong?  I suddenly have need of such tools.

There is a dump/restore pair for the ext2 filesystem:

I got it from ftp.ibp.fr, directory private/remy/dump.

It is an alpha version but as far as I can tell it is ok.

As long as you don't need multiple volumes.  For example, it chrashed
for me when doing backups to floppies, after about 15 or 16 floppies
(this was repeatable, or at least it happened two times).

Remy is at the moment too busy to work on it.

From what I looked at the code, it should be fairly straightforward,
although it does use background processes to speed things up.  Still,
it should not be too much for an enterprising person with some free
time to work on it and fix any remaining problems.  There sure seems
to be demand for it.  The filesystem reading routines are, after all,
already done and are not ALPHA (they are used by e2fsck et al).

1. Need tape utility to read VMS BACKUP tape on Unix/Ultrix.

I know someone must have solved this problem.  I have access to Unix systems,
4.3bsd as well as Ultrix, but no VMS.  A customer sent me a tape which was
made on VMS 4.6 with the BACKUP command.  I want to read this tape, of course.
Does anyone know of a utility, whether public domain or otherwise, which does
the trick?  Thanks in advance.
