I have to add my own little testimonial for nedit.  It is a wonderfully
useful editor, small (at least the dynamic-Motif version), but with
all the features you would want.  The keyboard macros to load files or
access commands are really well thought-out.  It also looks nice, and
is easy to configure.

Very well done.

I dislike me-too's, but this is an exception. I've been looking for a
full-featured editor and nedit is just right. Very easy to use, very
stable, very cool with Xaw3d libs. Good work!

For those running Red Hat, you will find RPMs of it at:

ftp.redhat.com:/pub/contrib/RPMS

You need the nedit-4* and then you need either the nedit-static* -or-
nedit-shared*.  The first contains the docs for nedit.  nedit-static
is the package with the statically linked binary.  You need that if
you don't have Motif 2.0 (and you may still need it if you have
something other than Metrolink or Red Hat Motif).  If you have Motif,
you can get nedit-shared.

Thanks to Red Hat for this inclusion.  For those with Motif libs, sources
are on:
ftp://ftp.fnal.gov/pub/nedit/

Other utilities may be found in the parent directories.

General information on fnal software distributions is in:
http://www.fnal.gov/fermitools/abstracts/nedit.html
and its parent directories.

I don't remember any major bruises in the build, other than properly setting
directories.  This is not an 'imake' build. (A blessing or curse, depending
on your lib* tree; YMMV.  For the record, I like 'imake' now that I have
MooTiff and their 'mxmkmf' - it's usually seamless.)

Well, sources (in RPM format) are also available from:

ftp.redhat.com:/pub/contrib/SRPMS

Just wanted to let folks know we don't do binary only stuff if we can help
it!  :-)

I didn't have *any* trouble building it other than hacking it to build
both shared and static versions at the same time.  You can get my SRPM
and check out the patch if interested...provided you have rpm on your
system.

The editor is really great, the only thing I don't know how to fix is
delete key, which works like backspace. I tried remapDeleteKey: false
with no success.
Any ideas?

yeah.  Put the following line in your ~/.Xmodmap

keycode 22 = BackSpace

I've fixed the problem in the mean time. It turns out that NEdit looks
for ~/.Xdefaults-(hostname). I had 'nedit.remapDeleteKey: False' in
~/.Xdefaults, which wasn't used.
Thanks for all the help.
