Cannot Play Audio CD

Cannot Play Audio CD

Post by Dom Incoling » Fri, 26 Jul 2002 01:17:15

Hello,

I installed SuSE 8.0 about 3 weeks ago (my first experience with Linux).
For the most part, I am very happy with SuSE.  However, there are few
nagging problems that I can't solve due to my lack of experience using
Linux.

For example, I am not able to play an audio CD.  When I try to play an
audio CD using a graphical tool such as 'KsCD ', 'gtcd', or 'WorkMan', I
get an error message stating 'No Disc'.  I have verified many times that
the audio CD is inserted correctly in the CD reader.  When I run
'gcdplay' from the shell, 'gcdplay' logs an 'Input/output error'.

I am able to successfully mount, read, and burn data CDs.  This problem
affects only audio CDs.

Based on information I found on the SuSE support database, I also
changed the file permissions for the CD-ROM drive to assign access
rights to the group 'disk'.  I then added myself to the group 'disk'.
But neither of these changes solved the problem.

Has anyone experienced this problem on have an idea what may be causing
this?  Thanks very much for your help.

When you do

        ls -l /dev/cdrom*

what does it say?

FWIW, I see this as well with my both my DVDROM and CDRW drives with audio
CD's and GUI cd players, but I am able to just hit play and it plays the
disks fine, and even retrieves the info on them.

I know this is probably useless to you. :-(

1. What type of CD is it? is it a mixed mode, that is, it has both
data and music? like the new *y bopping cd's these days?
2. Do you put the CD before or after loading the program?
3. Do you press play? or do you press the >> then press play once you
see the track number?
4. Do you wait until the CD stops searching?

The problem sounds more of a reading error/issue rather than a linux
issue per-say.

If your only drive is the CD-RW drive, the fact that you
can burn CDs with it means it's /dev/scd0, not /dev/hdc.
In kscd, go to the set up dialog, and for 'CD-ROM Device'
change it to /dev/scd0. OTOH if you have a plain old CD
drive in addition to the CD-RW drive, this might not
help (but it should allow the CD-RW drive to play CDs
anyway). Other CD player apps will need similar setup
or a command line switch - check the docs for the playier
in  /usr/share/doc/packages/<app name>.

And make sure permissions are correct for /dev/scd0.

Just a guess.

As root, cd to /dev and then rm cdrom, then recreate it

        ln -s /dev/scd0 cdrom

Make sure the permission bits are like the above, so you don't
have to be root to use it.

Good luck!  Hope we go it right for you!

1. CD-RW cannot play audio CD

Greetings! After two week's work, I have made the Linux
box work as I want. The only 'blocking' problem, if any,
is that the XMMS/KsCD won't play audio CD from the CD-RW.

I use realpayer and it works fine. I use CD-RW for CD-ROM
or cd record and it works fine too. sndconfig works fine.

In the fstab:
/dev/cdrom  /mnt/cdrom  iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
ls -l /dev/cdrom:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  root 4  2  7 23:07 /dev/cdrom -> scd0

No sound could be heard from both the speaker or the
earphone connected to the CD-RW drive's front jacket.

I checked the small cable connection from CD-RW to Sound
Blaster Live 5.1 card: should be OK.

What could be wrong? Your helps are greatly appreciated.
