You probably don't want to change XWindows, but just the window manager
running on top of it.

Slowly and clearly, please.
First, saying "The 3.2 cd distribution" is ambiguous, since there are a
number of Linux distributors who each use their own numbering system for
distributions. Are you using Slackware, OpenLinux, RedHat, Debian,
SUSE, or some other I've missed?
Second, do you want to reconfigure your existing window manager or get a
whole new one? If you want to reconfigure your existing window manager
(which I assume you want to do), you'll need to find the configuration
file. For FVWM95, assuming you don't have a special configuration
system like TheNextLevel, the file ~/.fvwm95 (and that ~ means your home
directory in UNIX) should be the one you want to create and edit. You
want to find an existing FVWM95 config file (on my system one is at
/etc/X11/fvwm95-2/fvwm95rc, but your mileage may vary), and copy that to
~/.fvwm95. Then edit away.
