New processor or new OS?

New processor or new OS?

Post by Ted Hold » Sat, 11 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Recent journal articles note that Intel's next generation processor
which they call a Zeon or Xeon or some such will perform the amazing
feat of increasing the performance of a (presumably NT) server
something like 40 percent, probably for the measely sum of somewhere
between 50 and 150 grand.  Has anybody in the Linux community noticed
this?  I mean, that would have to make for fabulous advertising, i.e.
spend 100K for a 40% increase or 50 dollars for a copy of RedHat 5.1
for a performance increase of several hundred percent, or maybe even
have some sort of a TV ad showing some dufus handing over a suitcase
filled with stacks of hundreds for one of the new servers while they
play Tom Lehrer's * Tango ("I ache for the touch of your lips,
dear, but much <more> for the touch of your <whips>, dear...") in the
background, I mean, how stupid would you have to be...

Not stupid at all! Think carefully - 40% faster NT means 60% less time
to wait for the inevitable crash. This translates into major league job
security for NT systems admins.

1. SLIP/PPP -->new kernel-->new compiler-->new make

Hello world!

I'm trying to install SLIP or PPP (made no choice yet, any tips?)
Therefore I needed a new kernel and tried to install 1.1.45.
To compile this I needed a new gcc version. I downloaded gcc 2.5.8, libc
4.5.26, binutils 1.9l.4 and tools 2.16.
I un-tar-ed them all and started to compile.
I now need gnu make 3.70 (in stead of 3.69) where can I find this?
I also have problems with libc.so.4, witch is linked to libc.so.4.4.4
It sais: desire minor version 514 and found 404
How do I solve this?
final question: Why isn't there a HOW-TO about these things?

I hope anyone can help me with this.

Greetings and thanx in advance,

Perjan Moors.
