Linux Image and Thumbnail Browsers

Linux Image and Thumbnail Browsers

Post by Shane Berring » Thu, 02 Jan 2003 20:34:59

After about 3 months using linux as a desktop I've found some pretty
good applications that at least rival what I used to use on Windows.
Unfortunately, I still haven't found a good Image Browser that can
handle thumbnails.

Right now, I use Kuickshow 0.82 for viewing individual images, but
haven't found something comparable to ACDSee or IRfanview on windows
for browsing directories with many graphics. Konqueror is bulky and
slow with thumbs and doesn't refresh well -- and GQView only gives you
a single column of thumbs from what I've seen. Are there any good
thumbnail/image viewer combination programs out there?

Also, I have been searching for a good program to generate web image
galleries. Lots of perl scripts, and concoctions using ImageMagick all
are clunky or awkward. I was hoping there was something out there like
Thumbsplus. Recently, I found JAlbum
(http://www.datadosen.se/jalbum/index.jsp) which works decently, but
doesn't seem to be widely adopted. Any suggestings for a program to
generate web galleries?

Thanks

After rebooting Windows, Shane Berringer mumbled:

This functionality is built into Nautilus.  Simply install a recent
distro.

I wrote some C code to generate an HTML that shows small versions of
the pix in a nice table.  However, it still has to load all the
original images, and I haven't yet coded it to peek into the size of
the picture and render it proportionally.

xzgv for X (this is an incredible piece of software)
zgv for the console (considering what this does this is also incredible)

there is an ACDSee clone gtksee (never tried it so can't speak for it)

Check out cthumb, curator, galrey, igal and webmagick.

Hope that helps,

1. Any image viewers for Linux with "thumbnails" out there?

I love the speed and sharpness of XV, but I find myself missing the
"thumbnail" capability of some image viewers for MS-Windows (Paint
Shop Pro 3.0 in particular) which allowed me to browse through lots of
image files at once for the one I'm looking for.  Is there any
such utility available for Linux?
