That may or may not be true. There are certainly Linux
gamers getting quite a bit of mileage out of Geforce's.
Although, if anything is childish, it's that kind of
benchmark. Who really cares about '* cards' when
'real work' is the topic of discussion?

It's been available for download for some months now.
Some of us have been using it on a daily basis since
before the first of the year.

As far as 'good USB' goes, it was as 'good' as the USB on
NT5 at that time (last year). Although, what you would want
with an ultra-low-speed bus on a server is perplexing.

SMP isn't the 'problem' with 2.2 or even 2.0, the reentrancy
        of the IP stack is.

Well, sure can't use TV-IN feature.

Sorry, did not see the first thread article.

I do use it too, much more better for some things, VIA
UDMA66 included (at least 80% faster on my machine).

This goes double for using a computer as a TV set.

As far as 'childish' peripherals go. I've been using
a Hauppauge WinTV 401 for close to 2 years now and
the tuners on the ATI all-in-wonders are also being
        supported these days.

I'm not sure if anyone in the Video4Linux community is
        even aware of that Asus.

Wow, works fine with my Riva TNT2 card.  I even have 3D
acceleration and everything.  You must be doing something wrong.

And just what exactly is it supposed to support again?

I do not talk about watching TV at my computer, what I can
perfectly do with videoforlinux and my AverMedia, I talk about
taking video/TV images and making them digital, compressing
with MPEG and recording on a CD ... does it sound childish
enough ? You have to admit that many people work at that,
so what can't be it a hobby for me ?  My card can take 60 fps
at full screen and that's interesting for me. GNU/Linux just can't
do it. I admit hardware vendor is half guilty of it, but just half.

Remember that what is childish for you can be important
for another persons. As an example, a lot of people think
about computers as toys, and many people do live from
them (me included), don't they ?

Me too. Just can't use a plus in my card to digitalize full screen
at 60 fps. As a graphics card it works fine. But let's forget it all :-)

I don't mind Windows 2000 Data Center and mind me *****
what it could do. I see Windows as a desktop environment, as
a server, I by far prefer any kind of Unix, sometimes I'd use
Solaris, other FreeBSD and other GNU/Linux. As a desktop,
only GNU/Linux can even try to compete with Windows, and
I know it is doing it very well ... just a little more evolution needed.

Dedicated hardware is much better at this. Otherwise,
you're just indulging in light dabbling. This also
goes for 3D video as well.

Now, let's be clear here --- GNU/linux just can't do it *with your card*.
GNU/linux can do "it" just fine with a number of other cards.... And
I speak from personal experience (although I have to admit to only
doing 50 fps, as I live in PAL-land ;-). There are two Iomega Buz in
the machine in the next room.

Get your 2.3.99 or 2.4.0-test or whatever it's called now.  The big difference
is that John T. Public can get 2.4 betas, but can he download Datacentre betas
off of the net?  Can he go down to Fry's and buy one?  Do the Win2000 boxed
sets include a copy of  Datacentre beta 1 (SuSE 6.4 at least actually includes
an [admittedly old] 2.3 kernel source package)

Of course no :-) I was just a kind of playing with my words, I like 2.4
:-)

Agree. Just wanted to point that there are Windows areas and GNU/Linux
areas, a 50 machines cluster is not for Windows (he!), and a playing machine
is not for GNU/Linux. Just by now ... let's allow the future talk :-)

Now, then let's got to drink something :-)

1. Help with Linux (DOS stuff, X-Windows)

Greetings.

I am a Linux beginner, and have just gotten most things that I need up and
running on my 386/33 at home. I am very impressed and pleased with Linux,
and am really happy to be able to avoid DOS/Windows, etc.

I do have a couple of things that I am having trouble getting working, and
have not been able to resolve by looking at the FAQ. Any help on these
is greatly appreciated.

1.  I have been able to get my DOS partition to automount, and as root I can
read, modify, and write the files. However, I cannot chown any of the files
on that partition, nor can I chmod them. I want to be able to log in as a
user (protect myself from my own ignorance!), and have a link into some
of my data directories on my DOS partition, and then be able to use Emacs to
edit my files. Any suggestions are greatly welcome, as I am very leary about
doing day-to-day operations as the root.

2.  I couldn't get the DOS emulator working. Is there a document or man
page about this beast. I know I am supposed to be making the break from
DOS, but I have to wean myself after many years of mindless dependency.

3.  I am having a hard time getting X-windows to work. I have an Orchid
Pro Designer II, a Sony CPD 1304, and a Microsoft Serial mouse attached to
COM1:. Does anyone have an Xconfig file that should work for that setup?

Actually, I am not sure that the Xconfig file is the problem. I did
(as root) 'startx 2> x.err'
and found the error message:
PEXExtensionInit: Couldn't open default PEX font file Roman_M

The general behavior that I am getting with 'startx' is as follows:
+ Screen goes blank (graphic mode)
+ Screen flashes white then blank again
+ Beeps (I think this only happened one time)
+ Hard drive is being accessed a lot.
+ Screen still blank, hard drive stops, and it just sits

I followed this up by typing 'du', and didn't see any hard disk activity,
so I am assuming that the system was crashed. I rebooted.

Now, when I just run 'xinit', I get mostly the same behavior, but the
system does not crash, and by using <CTRL><BKSP>, I could get back to
the shell.

At this point, I am at a loss as to what to do to get X working, but I
desparately need to do so, as to get any real work done (e.g. xdvi, ghostview)
I must have X-windows. I am not just playing with Linux for fun (although
I am having fun with it); I would really like to use it to do some writing.

I believe that is all my problems as of now. I am sure I can come up with more
once these are solved :^)

Thanks for any help,
