DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT 3D FREEWARE?

Post by Dylan ELLICO » Fri, 02 Feb 1996 04:00:00

: I see other operating systems, particularly Microsoft Windows, all
: lining up to do the 3d VR Internet thing.  Unless Linux gets a shot in
: the arm of 3d technology, I don't see it staying competitive.  It may
: indeed be a great freeware Internet server, but without 3d graphics
: the world is simply going to pass it by, and move on to bigger and better
: things.

No wonder Microsoft is lining up to Do 3d stuff, it is all glitz, no
substance. If you think that 3d is the wave of the future, think again,
average joe wants infomation that they can comprehend easily, and quickly,
that is fast and effient. Microsoft Does have a vision for the future, a
vision of world *, Linux on the other hand does not pretend to be
shooting for world *, Linux has found a niche woth people  which will
not be lured away by the threat of pretty pictures. The Linux user is the
power user, they go for machines and OS's that are fast effiecent and powerful
Yes yes, WINDOZE may win the race with people who are content to be slaves of
technology, but for the few who want to deal with effiency, speed power, and
a true 32 bit OS, the future is here now, let the masses flock to 3d images,
but remember what problems do they solve.

Also, I think you should realize, that your comment that if Linux is not
future minded then it does not deserve to be in the market place, is the
most rediculous thing I have ever heard, HELLO, what kind of a marketplace
provides products for free, I think that Linux solved that problem a long
time ago. IT'S NOT IN THE MARKETPLACE. IT'S FREE!!!!

Actually, it does, but don't worry about it: by the time you start
ranting you'll have forgotten why it was you didn't want to end up that
way :)

COME to the light, COME to the light...

No, Mr. Ellicott and those like him would evangelize whatever operating
system they settle on.  You have nuts like him using nearly every
kind of machine and OS since at least 1945.  The problem with
these sort of idiots is that they are:
a) ubiquitous^Wuibuiquitus^Weverywhere
b) close-minded
c) * (flame-wise, not physically)
d) boring.
The last, especially on Usenet, is the Fatal Flaw.  Nuts, loons, kooks,
and evangelists can be very interesting and amusing.  If you don't
believe me, look at the history of the KotM awards.  How many
of those people were OS-advocates? None.  I don't think any of them
even got Golden Killfile awards.

Now if some of the people in .advocacy had posts like:

RiscOS is EVIDENCE of SPACE ALIENS' involvement in the JFK
ASSASINATION!  Unaltered DISSEMINATION and REPRODUCTION of this IMPROTANT
INFORMATION is ENCOURAGED!

*then* they might be worth reading.  How 'bout it, fanboys?

Besides I thought that there were already several free OpenGL ports to
linux?.

     No 8-)
I don't like Windows either, but I do have an interest in VRML and
other 3d stuff 8-).  I personally like getting those meatly SGI OpenGL
graphics programs, compiling them, and running them *shrug*.

Yes, Mesa.  It's right now at the point where it's compatible but
fairly SLOOOW compared to others though.  (now that practically all of
OpenGL is emualted, they are working on speed mainly though.)

?  Mesa is slow compared to OpenGL on an SGI, but I have found
it to be considerably faster than the commercial linux version from
Evans & Sutherland. It also supports double-buffering and true-
color rendering which some others do not. I think Mesa is the best
OpenGL type product available for Linux. OpenGL without a 3D
graphics engine is slow period.  If you have found an OpenGL for
Linux that is faster than Mesa, I would appreciate knowing about it.

1. DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT 3D FREEWARE?

Sorry for the somewhat extensive cross-posting, but I don't seem to be
getting any responses on this issue at all.  Either I'm not reaching
the right people, or people really aren't all that concerned about any
of this.

I see other operating systems, particularly Microsoft Windows, all
lining up to do the 3d VR Internet thing.  Unless Linux gets a shot in
the arm of 3d technology, I don't see it staying competitive.  It may
indeed be a great freeware Internet server, but without 3d graphics
the world is simply going to pass it by, and move on to bigger and better
things.

Why worry?  Personally, my concern is about media control.  We are on
the doorstep of a great new era in compting - 3d over the Internet.
Nobody has a dominant position with regards to this yet.  It could be
something of an artistic renaissance, if the freeware tools are
available.  Or, if left fallow, it could be "commercial apps and
commercial content, as usual."  Which future would you prefer?

I have code which could serve as the basis for a highly efficient 3d
freeware library for Linux.  In fact, it could serve as base 3d code
for all operating systems, period.  It was designed with 100%
efficiency and 100% portability in mind.

I need to know whether it is worth my effort to push such a 3d
freeware project forwards.  If nobody is interested in this sort of
thing, then indeed it is not worth my effort.  In that case, I'd just
as soon go develop code for Bill the Anti-Christ.  Microsoft, at
least, has a vision as to what the future holds.  If the Linux
community cannot match and exceed that vision, then Linux does not
deserve to survive in the marketplace.

PLEASE give me some response, whether you're willing to develop code,
or whether you simply wish that such a 3d library was available.  I
need to know if this is "worth bothering with."

Cheers,
Brandon
