Microsoft stalls software maker
David Becker,  June 10 2003
---

Lawyers representing the software giant sent a cease-and-desist letter
last week to Esiod Systems, a small, Monroe, Wash.-based software
company formed early this year by former Microsoft developers Siddhartha
Rao and Caleb Doise. The letter demands that the company halt planned
distribution of Schnazzle, an inexpensive shareware application Esiod
had planned to begin selling this week.

---

The Microsoft letter says Schnazzle competes with a planned extension to
the Windows operating system that would allow PCs to wirelessly stream
media files to other devices.

A Microsoft representative confirmed the letter and said the company is
negotiating with Esiod. "We're working with them to protect our
intellectual property rights," the representative said.

Geez, these people are frigging incredible!  They don't even want to give
competing technologies a chance to develop, much less thrive.

Just goes to show you when you do business with M$, you are no longer in
control.  Tony Soprano could learn alot from these guys.

I find the most incredible thing about this is the MS demand that they
turn over the source code.

NDAs are pretty standard. But the source code demand is Bullshit, IMO.

So it would be worth their while to hire *nix guys just to keep them out
of the market. Has Microsoft ever hired Linux people to do 'research' ?

just GPL it and stick it on sourceforge... according to the article,
they're not using any Microsoft technology or code.

What a great way to get free code for something somebody else thought up.
It looks like it is even dangerous to work for M$.

the usual thing with these sorts of contracts is for the ex-employee to be
forbidden to do work on anything that is similar to what they have just
been working on... Microsoft have a variant... anything that Microsoft is
working on or is even postulating or touting as vapourware... that
effectively prevents you from doing anything at all afterwards if it looks
like being successful...

This is actually going two steps beyond the norm. The agreements that I
have to sign simply state that everything that I develop WHILE I work for
the company, belongs to the company.

Once I leave the company, I am free to develop whatever I want.
