No, he makes software that millions of people *don't* use, but are forced to
buy with their systems anyway.  (When I bought my machine, it came with
DOS/Windows.  I don't want/use DOS/Windows, but I couldn't get a discount
for not buying a license for DOS/Windows.)

I think it was Steve Wozniac who was the real geek behind Apple. :)

I think Linus Torvalds, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are the three coolests
geek in the world. So we all know what they have done to the computing
world. It will be cool also if someone could make a POSIX Real Time OS
for free.

BTW, I am looking for a newsgroup which discusses the various POSIX Real
Time implementations.  Could anyone please give me a pointer?

Thanks very much.

I think it is a big mistake to put Bill Gates of the same level as
Linus Torvalds.  Bill Gates is a fallen geek, simply because he compromises
technoledgy for the sake of profit.

Cordially,
Ben.

Jobs is also an "evil" profit-taker, which suggests that profits can't
be the sole problem.  Even geeks have to make a living :-).

More importantly, Bill Gates cannot be considered a "true geek" because
his last code was written in the mid-80s.

I was a few feet away from him at a talk when he indicated that the
last thing he actually coded was the Tandy 100/102's operating system.
(Which actually wasn't bad overall.  Microsoft did quite a good job
with 8 bit processors.  It's been with 16-bit and higher that the
problems have occurred.)

So don't worry about whether it's "true" multitasking...

Don't worry about whether it's "true" color...

Consider:  Is your computing hero a "true" geek?

No, Bill Gates is a business smart geek.  He knows what people want, and
delivers.  True, what he's giving us sucks, but most people don't care.
Bill Gates is not in the same boat as Linus.  Gates has to make money, that's
his life.  Linus is still a student, so it doesn't make that much difference.
Since Linux is free, the developers are able to do new innovative things with
it, and the users are willing to live with the occasional bugs.
For the general public, they would rather have something that doesn't change
much with lots of bugs.  Can you imagine 100 different revisions of DOS
within a one year period?  I mean, it's bad enough with the bugs in it.
People will not buy it.  They'll take one version with bugs and live with
it.

Technically, Bill Gates doesn't have that much money.  All his worth is
in Microsoft in stocks.  So, depending on how his stock is doing, that's
how much money he has, or that's how much he's worth.  Certainly, he's
got more money than the average Linux user, but from what I understand,
most of his worth is in MS stocks.  So, if MS stock drops big time, well. . .
some can only dream. ;)

Over the years, he's sold about a billion dollars worth of Microsoft
stock.
