Try Pan.  It can even handle binaries.  Real nice and fast.

SLRN for performance and ease of use.

I am using Pan and like it.  It isn't all that stable, but
I find it good enough to be useful and I like the interface
pretty well.

Tyr pan (like me :-)

It's still beat, but as long as you're careful, it's OK.

If you have a large number of threads in a group, let it finish loaing
and threading before you tell it to do something else.

Brad, I don't know if you're picking up a pattern here  ; ), but pan is:

excellent!

IMHO it's the best. v. good indeed.

MS Lookout Express GPF's if you try to do something elso while waiting
for threads to load so perhaps pan are making too good a job of copying it

I think Xnews is also available for linux, otherwise pan is great.

I'd recommend upgrading to Pan 0.9.4 like I'm running.  It doesn't crash
as much although you are right about letting it finish loading &
threading.  The best improvement is that 0.9.4 version has fixed the
memory leaks and I can see a big improvement in Pan's uptime.  The only
notable minus I've found in upgrading is that you've got to delete your
old .pan/data directory and reload it with 0.9.4.

Regards.

Amen to that! Now, as one slrn-er to another, could you help me
with a little something or two....
Problem 1 is that read posts disappear next session; I'd rather see them
next time with a 'D' next to them.
Problem 2 is that it objects to text flowing beyond so many characters
on a line from the editor (can't remember the number). Can't it do that
automatically?
Any tips? TIA.

Slrn is wonderful. It doesn't have a gui interface (it is a console
newsreader like tin) but it is extremely fast over slow connections,
very stable, can be easily customised, and is extremely pleasant to
use. Also, it looks extremely cool, what with all threading and
whatnot. And the fact that it runs on the console means you can
easily use it over a remote (ssh or whatever) connection. Give it a
try!

                        Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.

Yup.  Posting with "pan" here.  I've tried everything else, and "pan"
came out on top.

And I'm a command-line junkie.

Hi, I've got Slrn on my Solaris 8 box, but never used it.  Guess I'll have
to give it a try!

I'll give it a shot :)

enter a newsgroup using <ESC> 1 <Enter>. This should give you what you want.

Do you mean wrap text automatically? If so, you need to set this in your
editor. For example I use vim as my editor and this is indicated in my
.slrnrc:

set editor_command "vim -rv +%d '%s'"

and my .vimrc contains the following which will autowrap things for me:

let TextFiles = "*.txt,/tmp/pico.*,.article,.followup,.letter, \
                          */News/Postponed/*,/tmp/mutt*,*.tex"
  set formatoptions-=t
  set formatoptions+=2
  set textwidth=76
  execute "autocmd BufEnter " . TextFiles . " set textwidth=76 formatoptions+=t"
  execute "autocmd BufLeave " . TextFiles . " set textwidth=76 formatoptions-=t

Note: if you are using vim you can use gqap to wrap paragraphs as well.

You can also use pico (which I believe autowraps) or Nano (pico clone) which
definitely does if you don't feel like tinkering with vim.

Agent under Wine. You can run it if you are in Windows or Linux which can
be useful if you have to run Windows for some reason.

Pan crashes too frequently for my liking,  sorry.
