We've just had a thunderstorm, nothing unusual in that but I noticed something
I haven't seen before. There would be a ripple of lightning inside the
clouds, then a second or so later there'd be a discharge from cloud to
ground, almost like the charge was being built up before the ground strike.

We get only a couple of thunderstorms a year, if that, but I've never seen
that particular phenomenon before. It was four or five miles out to sea, so
we got a good view, and the effect was very consistant.

That's how it works. You get a strike from ground to cloud before you
get the strike from cloud to ground. IIRC, you can't actually see the
first strike though.
