of sending a 3com56K pcmcia (supposedly V.90) modem back to 3Com on
Friday. I had recieved it the day before, plugged it in, and was
consistantly unable to get a 56K V.90 connect to my ISP (my other Linux
box consistantly got 42K - 44-K connections on the same phone line),

Being open-minded, I waited til the next working day and called 3Com
tech support. I waited forever, finally got a rep on the line,
explained my problem and the tech guy said, "Linux? How do you spell
that? Oh. We don't support our product under Linux."

I said, "You just lost a sale; your modem is on it's way back to
you. I think I'll buy a Hayes."

It felt good.

Havn't seen Centronics much in the limelight recently either, and Cannon are
certinaly not the prime supplier of D connectors. Compuserve are having far
more trouble remaining a leader than thier GIF format.

Oh dear, you may set the standards, and continue to offer high quality
products, but when the box shifters move in........

Forget about USR/3Com modems. They also don't support
any way at all of doing a Flash ROM upgrade without
M$ software. Absolutely can't be done without at least
DOS installed on your hard drive (can't even be done with a
DOS boot floppy).

So I've got a x2 modem here which I just can't upgrade
to V.90.

Rich.

Hmm...my x2 Courier will support a flash upgrade via an XModem
transfer.  I was able to upgrade it to V.90 with Minicom.  Are you
*sure* you can't do Flash ROM upgrades from Linux?

I believe you may have to reprogram the
NVRAM in that modem.  This is assuming
it is compatible with Linux, and it not a windows
specific modem.  You could try again with an
externel US Robotics.  3Com and US Robotics
have merged recently, don't expect much
competition or innovation, in the next few
years.

1. Pleasure doing business w/ Walnut Creek

I recently purchased FreeBSD from Walnut Creek CD-ROM.

When it arrived, for some reason, the CD set was missing.

Without any hassle, Walnut Creek sent a replacement set -- which arrived in 2
days.

That kind of service is hard to find in the commodity PC market.

I recommend them.
