Web '93...Linux '98?

Although I'll be the first to admit I don't know the guts of Linux or
NT, I do read enough and think enough about subjects to warrant
risking a few musings.

It seems to me that Linux is going to kick some serious ass over the
next few years. As we go from Win98 to NT, and from just one PC in
many homes to any number of PC-like "smart" devices floating about
there, a huge opportunity for Linux to gain even more momentum awaits.

The more NT begins to eat away at the market share of the different
flavors of regular old UNIX, the more hi-end people are going to look
for an alternative.

At that leaves Linux in the catbird's seat.

But I don't think Linux will ultimately "kill" MS or play MS to
Microsoft's IBM...because as has already been shown, Gates can move
that company's direction on a dime. So once, say, as machines running
Netscape/Linux grow in popularity MS will figger out a way to dominate
THAT market as well. They have billions upon billions of dollars to
simply buy themselves into any emerging software concept that may
threaten them.

Having said all that, I betcha Linux (with or without MS's help) is
going to show up in many more places in the home and at work over the
next few years than we ever imagined.

Sorry to change topics on you, but:

A friend of mine came to visit me this weekend.  I live out in the hills
a ways, so he used his computer mapping program to get some maps to my
place and print them out.

I looked at the bottom of the maps and read:

"Copyright (C) 1998 Microsoft Corporation and/or its contributors."

Isn't this kinda like saying:

"Copyright (C) 1998 Brian 'Beej' Hall and/or whoever actually wrote this."

Actually MS could not create a product called MICROSOFT LINUX because
the term LINUX is a trademark held by Linus. Remeber a while back this
guy (Croce?) said that he came up with the name and idea of Linux way
back. After a lawsuit paid for by many of the champions of Linux and
free software the trademark was freed and ``given'' to Linus for safe
keeping.

More likely MS would rip off Linux by creating a ``product'' called
``MICROSOFT L-OS'' or something similar. But, hey, thats okay because
Billy G. will find some way to*up even something as wonderful as
Linux and no one will buy it.

And why should they, when folks can just get it for free like they
always have?

Let's hope he does!  Grounds for a trademark infringement suit.

Then you would have a lawsuit based entirely around the M$ tactic
of language manipulation to dupe the unwitting...

And, even better, it could be filed in EVERY COUNTRY.....

Another reason why I ***STILL*** hate IBM.  Look at the bottom of
an AIX manpage, and it's all
Originated: IBM and others...

Yeah, like IBM originated NFS.... or ls, for that matter

Bunch of pathetic liars....

Have you ever seen the big red book from IBM entitled "IBM Computer
glossaary" or something like that?  It's a dictionary/encyclopedia
of computer terms from IBM.  All the entries about unix stuff don't
actually say "unix", they just say "AIX", as if the idea was originated
in AIX.  (Example: it says a X terminal is a graphic terminal for use
with AIX.)  It does this throughout the whole book.  It's pretty
sickening.

I was thinking of the same thing!  Don't forget, it also refers to
general computing terms and relates them to IBM.  As I remember, if you
were to look up "process", it would say something like "In AIX, a
process is..." or "On an AS/400, a process is...".  Quite comical...

How to do it?  I thought the command was something like xcdplay or xplay
but I don't seem to have either (did xp^D and xc^D in tcsh, got nothing
that looked interesting)
