AFAIK, Google (www.google.com) runs on Linux. Alltheweb (www.alltheweb.com)
runs on FreeBSD

I know that Google runs on linux.  If you go to http://news.netcraft.com/ you can see what OS their _server_ runs, but that's about all AFAIK.

Hope that helps,

Yep.  Yahoo uses FreeBSD also, although they may have some Linux servers
in there someplace.

The site www.yahoo.com is running unknown on FreeBSD.
The site mail.yahoo.com is running unknown on FreeBSD

Hmm... I wonder what this "unknown" could be?  Could it be II-s? :-)

1. linux search engine?

Does anyone know if there's a good search engine (and maybe even an
index, like yahoo's) around anywhere? I couldn't find anyone (exept for
the ones provided by altavista and such, but they just add a "+linux" to
the search...)
