what flavor of linux should I start off with ? ( newbie )

Post by Douglas Col » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I have a friend who is curious about linux and I have more experience with
redhat 5.1 and mandrake 5.3 than any other distro ....

So I am wondering what would you folks reccomend for a fellow who is still
suffering through win 3.1  ( and leave it alone you windblows trolls )
and wants to exercise his freedom of choice in operating systems ......

Please post to the list so that he can read them ( he is not able to post  to
the list )

Thanks folks

I like Mandrake 6.5, I've had it up and running for a while now on dual
PentiumIII 500mhz each system. I like that the windows manager defaults
to KDE and I like KDM better than GDM used by redhat.

I tried both Caldera 2.3 and Redhat 6.1 as well as Redhat 6.0 -- My recommendation
is: go with Redhat 6.1, IMHO this is the best Linux distribution ever!

1. Newbie choosing Linux Flavors

From the newbie standpoint of installing/learning Linux, is there any
clear advantage to any of the different flavors of Linux (Red Hat,
Debian, Slackware, S.u.S.e et. al.

Similarly, is there any clear disadvantage to any of the different
commercial releases. I like the idea of buying an intro book and getting
the release along with it. (Although you CAN download the guts for free,
the time saved and extra docs would be worth it to me.)

I've been considering Slackware and Red Hat for various reasons. I
realize that Linux is Linux, so once up and running, I'm sure I'll be
happy. It will be going on a 486 motherboard with the Pent. Overdrive
and 32 MB of Ram. (A Red Hat "Live" CD-ROM boots up great and runs X
with no (known) problems.)

Thank you in advance for any and all advice!
