Distribution Recommendations ??

Post by Jim R » Mon, 07 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I am (another) Linux tryer.  I bought a "pre-owned" InfoMagic Linux
Developer's Resource (June 1994 edition).  I have been toying around with
it, but it's time to get serious.  Can anyone recommend an up-to-date Linux
distribution?  Red Hat? Caldera? Slackware?  Others?  I have Linux
Journal's 1997 Buyer's Guide and have been thumbing through it.  I am
somewhat of
"power user" in Windoze 95/NT, and have hand-built my system, but a
UNIX/Linux expert I am not!  Here is what I am running, should anyone know
of hardware incompatibilities:

AMD K5-133 on VXPro-type motherboard (Sibercom, I think).
AWE64 sound card.
S3ViRGe video card.
LiteOn CDROM.

Any useful advice would be appreciated  :-)
JimR.

Personally, I like Red Hat.  Current release is 4.2, and is easy to
setup and use.

Know that feeling.  I am VERY well versed in DOS, Win3.1, Win95, WinNT
and OS/2.  But the pull of LINUX was unrelenting...I'm currently
running it on my IBM Thinkpad 755CE and installed it thru a BackPack
CD-ROM.  Very nice :)

First of all, the system that you have is absolutely un-sutable for
Linux :)
The VXPro boards are not the bset boards that you can get, if you buy a
board, get something good like Gigabyte, Asus or something simular..
(don't get M Tech boards thou)
AWE64 sound card will do you no good in Linux (or Windows :)
S3Virge Video card is a waste of money again..... the 3D features SUCK
and no game supports it, but the good thing is that it is an S3 chipset,
linux has a good support for S3 cards.. I got Diamond Stealth64 VRAM 4MB
and 3Dfx for 3D stuff ( glQuake should be out soon :))))!!! (for
linux!!!!!!!!!!!!)
If you want a good CD-ROM, get Toshiba, it is a lot faster then Lite-ON
and ALOT more reliable.
The good distrebution is Debian. It is kind of hard at first :) but you
have a better control over your system.

Should be fine.

Quote:> >AWE64 sound card.

Doesn't work out of the box on any of the mainstream distributions.  Not
too hard to patch a 2.0.30 kernel to use it though.  Once it's done it
sounds fantastic.

Quote:> >S3ViRGe video card.

Get Red Hat 4.2.  It should work find out of the box.  With a little
work, you can get good hardware acceleration.  (Get the update to XFree86
3.3, and then perhaps patch that.)

Quote:> >LiteOn CDROM.

Is this IDE/ATAPI???  If it is it works fine.  Otherwise, I don't think
it does.  I haven't seen it in the list of oddball cd-rom drives
supported by linux.

I would strongly recommend Red Hat as well.

Good luck,

1. Commercial Distribution recommendation?

I'm looking for a company that sells the Linux distribution on floppy.  This is for
my local college, who does not have internet access and would much rather deal
with a ... dealer, i guess.

Any suggestions as to who to call?  Were in northern Illinois (USA).
