USB compact flash readers anyone?

Post by bill shin » Mon, 07 Apr 2003 05:57:12

I am looking for a usb compact flash reader that works with linux.
I have a ZIO compact flash reader, that barely works with windows XP
(Windows XP is complaining about driver errors, and it works after
I reboot, but it doesn't work after I replace a compact flash card,
so it isn't acceptable (and, to any wintrolls, please find a decent
device drive FOR THE WOLRDS MOST PREVALENT COMPACTFLASH CARD READR)
.

What should I buy?   I need to buy a couple, and I also need to buy
one that really works with XP. ZIO fromm Microtechint is not compatible
with Windows XP, and I haven't bothered to try it with linux, because
it looks like this company doesn't have it's shit together.  If you
can't even get your shit to work with Windows XP, don't bother.
Euthansia is the solution...

My Microtech CameraMate Smart Card Reader works well with my linux system.

I am not certain, but I think ZIO compact flash readers will also work
with Linux as well.

I have had no problems with linux - I use a Uno! cf reader, and also a
Kangaru flash drive - both work great with every distro I have tried.

I have one from SanDisk, model SDDR-73.  It's great for a Zaurus guy
like myself, in that not only will it read CF, but also SD/MMC.  I
picked it up at the MicroCenter for $35.

I have an el-cheapo ($24.95 at Walmart) Lexar CF Reader that I've used
successfully on LGX.  Though now I find myself never using it since I got
wifi for the Z.

Try the SiteCom CN-300.

I have one, it's a MultiReader that reads SD/MMC/CF/SmartMedia/Memory
stick. Runs perfectly well under Linux as a USB Mass Storage device,
and is explicitly supported as such by SiteCom.

1. USB Compact Flash Reader, Help with setup

I am trying to get the compact flash card reader that came with my I-Jam
50 setup. It is a USB mass storage device, I'm running 4.2 Release #4. I
have the following devices in my kernel config :

device uchi
device usb
device ugen
device umass
device scbus
device da
device pass

The order above is the order in which the appear in the config file
(this makes a difference I thing).

I do make depend, make, make install, and reboot. The kernel does
correctly prode the device at boot time, I get :

usb0: <VIA 83C572 USB controller> on uhci0
usb0: USB revision 1.0
uhub0: VIA UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered
ugen0: SHUTTLE SCM Micro USBAT-02 , rev 1.00/0.05, addr 2
uhci1: <VIA 83C572 USB controller> port 0xd800-0xd81f irq 10 at device
4.3 on pc
i0SC[A
usb1: <VIA 83C572 USB controller> on uhci1
usb1: USB revision 1.0
uhub1: VIA UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub1: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered

camcontrol devlist -v give me:
scbus-1 on xpt0 bus 0:
<  >                               at scbus-1 target -1 lun -1 (xpt0)

camcontrol rescan 0 gives me :
camcontrol: CAMIOCOMMAND ioctl failed: Invalid argument

and when I try to mount I get
mount -t msdos /dev/da0 /mnt/flash
msdos: /dev/da0: Device not configured

I think part of the problem is that I do not have a SCSI adapter in the
system and the scsi code isn't getting activated, but I'm not sure. Does
anybody have a solution, or thought on what to try next?
