I too run a linux based machine (http://leviathan.tamu.edu,
gopher://leviathan.tamu.edu, ftp://leviathan.tamu.edu) as an
information server.  It is an 80486/33 with 16 MB DRAM, using
two IDE drives.  It serves gopher, http, and ftp protocols as an
information server.  WAIS type searching/indexing is integrated
in many areas for both gopher and http clients.  Many files are
gzipped and uncompressed on the fly.

I have heard many opinions as to what level of access an
inexpensive intel based server can support.  Back when I had
only ca 4,000 hits per day I was informed by some "learned"
people that I should not exagerrate my access rates.  (They
actually sent me private E-mail suggesting that I should not
fabricate usage statistics as it could reduce my credibility.)

I responded by posting my usage stats summary.  Access rates
have continued to climb. They are averaging around 7,700 daily
now.  I do not know what level of access this rather mediocre
machine can actually tolerate.  I am now seeing times when the
accesses seem a little sluggish.  I am planning on upgrading to
an 80486/66 CPU to see if that helps.

On one day when I logged 11,093 accesses, there were 1100 in one
hour.  This is about 17.5 per minute, so there would be an
average of 3.5 seconds per access.  Access requests, of course,
are not evenly distributed.  People request, view, request,
view, etc. . .  Access requests are by their very nature
spradic.

I honestly believe that even an 80486/33 can support more
accesses than this.  I do not know how to rationally benchmark
this type of server, but am open for suggestions.

I have here include the http/gopher and ftp access stats for
March 1995.

I find a linux based information server to be quite
satisfactory.

However, I am also certain that running linux is not a good
option for many people.  It requires the same degree of patience
and attention to detail that any unix system does.  People who
are impatient, pay little attention to detail, willfully
disregard documentation, and desire a shrink-wrapped commercial
approach would be better served with another platform.
