When compared to DOS and OS/2?

There's an achievement...  Be more meaningful with numbers though.

The above looks like sarcasm.

The order probably means nothing, today (Sat) linux is the 4th listed item:
                        Title: System Commander
                        Title: Microsoft DOS 6.x Upgrade
                        Title: Intranetware 100 User Upgrade
                        Title: Complete Red Hat Linux

Quote:> I'd like to see numbers too.

How the number were collected would also be very important. I AM NOT
suggesting that the following applies to this list, but I have seen
distributors create various top ten or best seller lists that include
products that are not moving as fast as they want in an attempt to generate
a little more e*ment, and get rid of excessive inventory.

What's really weird is that they says it's a top five list, but it has ten
items on it.

Well, on the PC Data lists, which are based on surveys of major retail
software outlets (CompUSA, Egghead, the mail order places, and places like
that), it's nowhere near the top five.  It's down near the OS/2 level, a few
orders of magnitude (yes, I know what an order of magnitude is) below
Windows 95 upgrades.

One version of Linux from one publisher, who is not even one of the
mainstream distributors of Linux (Simon and Schuster I mean, not
Red Hat), is selling about as well as DOS 6 upgrades.

You misread the page (they had some formatting problems):

Did you notice the title?

Top 5 Business Title by Platform.

DOS / OS2
a) System Commander
b) MS DOS 6.x Upgrade
c) Intranetware 100 User Upgrade
d) Complete Red Hat Linux
e) Intranetware 25 User Upgrade

Win95, NT
a) Windows 95 Upg CD
b) Office Pro 97/Bookshelf
c) Office Pro 97 Comp Upg
d) Windows 95 Upg
e) Notron Antivirus

Macintosh
a) Quark XPress
b) Norton Utilities
c) Photoshop
d) Illustrator Upg.
e) Photoshop Upg.

Note that the title said 'Top 5' and what do you know, on the end of
the fifth entry is a screwed up heading - unless of course Novell
changed its name recently to Novell Win95, NT.

IOW, Linux is selling about as well as DOS 6 upgrades.

: IOW, Linux is selling about as well as DOS 6 upgrades.

dont worry we'll be getting there ... a year ago it was
nowhere, today it's 'only on par with DOS 6 upgrades', in
a year it will be selling 'only 10% better than NT 5.0'.

not that Linux hackers care much ;)

Did anyone actually *read* this article?

System Commander, DOS 6.x, Intranetware, Linux, Norton Antivirus, and
Windows 95 are *business* *applications*?
Linux is a DOS or OS/2 application?
Office 97 is a DOS or OS/2 application?
Windows 95 is a DOS program? This sure must come from an OS/2 or Linux
user. I guess Microsoft would not agree ;-)
Windows 95 upgrade is twice on the list? The first time it's a CD
version. And the second time it comes on what? I've never heard they
sell it on floppies.

I know.  I figure if I keep bagging it then some of the things I bag
may even get fixed for me...

1. Barnes & Noble Best Seller List

I've been wailing on the comp section guy at my local B&N store to stock
more Linux titles. Now, when he sees me he just groans and throws his
hands up.

Tonight, I went in to exchange an HTML book I received as a gift and he
dragged me to the B&N Best Seller Shelf at the front of the store. Smack
dab in the middle of the display was SAM's Teach Yourself Linux in 21
Days.

He told me that there was a sudden surge in Linux sales in the last two
weeks and that the SAMs book was THE number one seller in the whole comp
section - NATIONWIDE. Hmmmmmm...
