So I finally talked my buddy from out of town into having a peek at Linux.
Now, this guy is one of those types where he sticks with what he knows,
even if he doesn't particularly like it.  Case in point, he is still using
Windows 95.  Yeah, I know.

Anyway, he comes over and I am going to show him this awesome "new"
operating system called "lye-nucks" (he's a Jeff Foxworthy type, I refer
to him as a red-tek).  So I'm giving him the grand tour, concentrating on
those things that he does himself and loading up the corresponding linux
version.  MS Office..boom, Star Office.  Outlook...boom, Evolution.
IE...boom, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla.  Multimedia, Games, configuration,
etc.  I show him some scripts that I wrote and demonstrated how easy it is
to write scripts by throwing one together for him real quick. After this,
I start to show him the really cool features like multiple
workspaces/desktops.

Keep in mind that I am working on my just rebuilt system cuz it's faster
and I wanted to impress him, but I was having problems with the video card
settings at the time (I've found the problem and resolved it since).  So
I'm showing him how I can switch between Windows Managers and...screeech!
System deadlock, no mouse, no keyboard, nothing.

I think I must have had an inkling right then of what Mr. Gates went
through at the unveiling of Win95.  I was sweating and thinking This is
not good, not good at all. Then he says, "Well just reboot the darn thang
and show me some more!"

It dawned on me that he is so used to system lockups and reboots using
Win95 all the time that he's not finding any of this out of the ordinary
and is actually still impressed with what he was shown.  Of course I
explained to him that this was not at all the norm for Linux and that I
was having hardware issues...but he didn't care, he had me burn him off a
copy of Red Hat and away he went.

Just an amusing anecdote I wanted to share with you all.

Thank-you!

I am a US Southern myself with the Foxworthy (Southern commedian) accent.
Since I call Charlie Brown's pal Li-nus, and Linux was created by a Linus
(I don't know how they say it in Finland, though), I just naturally
pronounced it lye-nucks.  I had read the word literally thousands of time,
but never once heard it pronounced.  Though there's actually a newsgroup
called roadrunner.sc.linux (roadrunner is my cable ISP here in SC) I don't
personally know another Linux user.

Then, I went to a computer store looking for a new video card, and the
salesman asked if he could help me.  I said I was considering a new video
card (I never did get one), but wanted it to work with lye-nucks.  He said
"I don't know anything about Lin-ux" and walked away.

I suddendly realized that I was in bed with this fantastic babe of an OS
and didn't even know how to say her name.

Thanks again.  Lin-ux it is.

Funny. I have a friend of mine, that don't want to use
Linux no matter how many things I show him. He's a
programmer, and have used computers with me since
we were 12 years old, he's a clever man and no dumb
at all with computers, he just don't like Linux, and he has
no intelligent reason to be so. He even get impressed with
some things I show him, but I can't learn the cause that
sticks him to his Windows ... well I should say to their
Windows, 'cause he has got Windows Me, 2000 and XP
in the same machine ... can't guess what for ... I have
even made a PHP+MySQL database for his DivX
library :-) but he insists in sending me the list in Access
format.

I'm sure it wasn't completely locked, though I can't verify that cuz I'm
not running telnet, ssh or a VNC Server on this system.  I had a download
going on and I did notice that the NIC activity lights were still blinking
away though.  To tell the truth, I panicked at the moment given the
circumstances and didn't think recovery beyond the obvious.

If you know of any way to recover from an apparent X-server deadlock like
that, please let me know, cuz I hate rebooting :-)

You didn't happen to be running a VooDoo or related AGP video card on an AMD
processor by any chance?

Then it *was* going for sure, only your keyboard mouse handler etc had
locked up or was waiting.

Understandable, especially if one has a Windows background.

The only way I've found sucessfull, is to telnet or ssh in from another
box. So I'd recommend setting something up. My Freesco router has telnet
*out* only, so I can use it to telnet into my box should this happen.

How good is roadrunner support for Linux? I chose Telocity specifically
for the support? And what part of SC? I'm in Columbia.

I use roadrunner here in central NC (I'm in asheboro, little redneck
town) and I have no problems with RR.  of course, they say that they
do not support it, either....so I guess it works out well that I have
no problems :)

I'm running a standalone system, so I *can't* telnet in or anything.  I
have had a few X lockups like that, and the first thing I do is have a
beer and come back to it half an hour later.  More often than not, it
has unlocked itself again

have no problem using it, but their installers had no clue re Linux. Not
too surprising really.  He was interested in the fact that it didn't
take a reboot to change the ip :)

This may or may not have been an indication that the driver was
working. The activity light goes off even if traffic is not destined
for your host, this happens for example if you have a non-switched
network or it's a broadcast. Some cards just need to have power
switched on to notice traffic and light diodes accordingly, regardless
of drivers being initialized or running.

I'm assuming you did try the ctrl-alt-backspace thing since you said
the keyboard wasn't responding.

Obviously, "light going off" was probably the worst choice of words in
that context. Clarification: 's/goes off/blinks/'.
