This does not necessarily mean that the server is a Linux server;
however, cool stats and a cool website.

Looks like the hacks, exploits, vulnerabilities, viruses,
worms, and bugs are taking their toll.  IIS is looking
a wee bit like a corpse.

NetCraft is good for statistical information but they bombarded my servers
with requests for version information so I firewalled them up.

Add whatever percentage 8 more servers would put into Apache's favor.

Well, the Gartner Group has advised that all their customers migrate
off IIS, so it's look like more than a corpse now.  :)

Since Apache runs on almost all versions of Unix, and on Windows, how
is this a benefit of Linux?  You are being hypocritical by posting so
many off topic posts after blasting others for doing that.

Huh?  That's a strange way to read in *increase* in share.

You might want to go look at the graphs to see how the numbers change
over time.  Graphs are available at http://www.netcraft.com/survey/.

Before anyone points out that there was a slight decrease in IIS share
over the last month, and wonders why the thing I just posted mentioned
an increase, go look at the graphs.  The Dec 2001 --> Jan 2002
decrease is well within the normal month-to-month variation.  The
overall trend is that Apache and IIS are going up, and Netscape is
going down the toilet.

On an IP basis MS still holds almost 50%.  Netcraft also confirms this
but only show this in the archival data:

http://www.netcraft.com/Survey/index-200106.html

Quote from this page:

"Microsoft Windows has a significantly higher share of the web when
one counts by computer, rather than by host, as in the conventional
Web Server Survey. The survey shows 49% of the computers running the
web are Windows based; a little more than all of the Unix-like
operating systems combined. As some of the 3.6% of computers not
identified by Netcraft operating system detector will in reality be
Windows systems, it would be fair to say about 50% of public Web
Servers world-wide are run on Microsoft operating systems Although
Apache running on various Unix systems runs more sites than Windows,
Apache is heavily deployed at hosting companies and ISPs who strive to
run as many sites as possible on a single computer to save costs.
Windows is most popular with end-user and self hosted sites, where the
host to computer ratio is much smaller."

Almost %50 percent of web server administrators have chosen to run a
Microsoft platform.

When it comes to secure transactions Microsoft dominates:

Alright, thats it.  I'm tired of everyone misusing the term IP.

On an IP basis, microsoft does NIT hold more than 50%.  You have it
exactly backwards.  The reason for this is that you can easily host tens
of thousands of IPs on a single UNIX machine, and people do it all the time.

So, what I understand from the server report is....

1. It takes many more Microsoft servers to host an equivalent number of
websites, and...

2. Most Microsoft-hosted websites are of the "my kid's first webpage"
variety.

Right?

Well you know the MS recommendation-only one major task (app) per server.
