Lie. Damn lie. And the people at Byte should know better.

Then they whine because they are flamed for not researching
the subject they are trying to cover. Please...

"If you don't play ball with us, we'll send you the way of
the Amiga." Yeah, subtle threats always help to endear
me to a trade magazine. Other publications do a much better
job of covering the industry. That's why I read them instead.
(How's that for a "subtle" threat?)

As I see it, you reap what you sow. Byte and others of its
ilk have been carpet bombing the industry with Wintel hype,
vapor, and propaganda for a decade. Then they wonder why nobody
likes them anymore, or why people from the "alternative"
communities are so eager to toast them black when they
*up.

I say, stop whining, research your story the way you
should (instead of hunting around for press releases to
plagiarize), and _report the facts on what is out there_.

There, that's my little contribution to "The Sound And
The Fury" for the day...

Believe me, I understand that the Linux community needs
to present a professional face to the industry if we
wish to receive professional consideration. I cannot,
however, allow blatantly wrong statements such as the
above quoted to go by without notice. Linux has been
around long enough by now that people can hop on the
Web and confirm the facts about it. If they did, they
wouldn't publish such idiocy in their articles.

Hmm... I don't have to have DOS to install Linux.
I can always make a boot diskette using another Linux
system or buy a distribution that includes boot diskette,
such as RedHat 4.0. Plug it in, pray that it recognizes
your CD and SCSI and play!    :)   No DOS involved.

Byte magazine has turned into just another monthly polished rag, on
the rack of other worthless "computer" magazines. I dont see why
anyone is suprised by this, how many more Inane articles by Jerry
Pournelle and his troubles with his computers he has names for, can
one read??

This article is from February. I think Lars Wirzenius had something to
say about Linux advocacy some time ago. Do you have something new to
add to this issue ?

1. Linux Advocates == Unix Advocates

(Yes the double equal in the subject is intentional)

If you love Linux, you love Unix.

If you love Unix, you love SystemV.

  - OR -

(

If you love Unix, you love BSD.

If you love BSD, you love FreeBSD.

)

Heh, ;^)

*nix rocks.  Industrial-strength *nix rocks more.  I am
working with a mix of free and non-free *nix, and I can
honestly say the non-free *nix is better....  At the
moment...  I hope that will change....

Industrial strength *nix, for-free, would conquer.

I whole-heartedly thank all those who have made free *nix
possible, and understand that theirs is a work in progress.
