...from a big manufacturer

I got a lot of links to Joe's used laptops and last-years-gear-r-us though.
And Dell will sell me a few thousand units with linux installed. Why can't
somebody just tell me which major manufacturer I can jump to right now to
get a Linux laptop? Best Buy? Comp USA? Gateway? Mail order from IBM even?

What is wrong with people here that they think a guy is going to go out,
drop a big chunk on a new laptop knowing they're paying for xp like it or
not, then go home and trash xp and install linux, not knowing if it even
works or not. And when it doesn't, and everyone here knows it doesn't,
you're up shit creek. Take it back and say, "Yeah, I installed Linux on it,
is that ok?" Yeah right, good one

Well, why don't you start to whine in the xp-newsgroups, where you belong,
idiot?
You come here, treat us like shit and start to complain that you are
treated like any braindead moron like you just deserves it.
Now get lost, dimwit

It is difficult enough to buy a desktop linux machine! WalMart will do
it, but not many others.

Well, then you should lay the blame on M$ contracts with the
OEMs that make laptops.  It's an unfortunate circumstance,
but that is the way it is.  With desktops the situation is
different in that you can purchase a pc without any o/s on
it.
The situation is known as a monopoly.

Why not?  I did.  Except I knew there would be a way to make it work,
and I was right.

No, dumbass.  You format the drive and say "It won't boot".  Same as you
would if you replaced XP with Win 2000.

You probably have no idea what a big laptop manufacturer is.  (Hint: pretty
much everyone except IBM has their laptops made by a handful of companies
that most people have never heard of).  What you are probably really asking
for is a big reseller.  Someone gave you one of those: Dell.

No everyone here is smart enough to go look up the specs on the laptop
before they buy and make sure all the hardware will work. Matter of fack
my new company (old one sold use) just dished out money for new Dell
2650s. First this I did was put my Redhat 8 boot CD in and fire it up.
Deleted the XP shitware and installed RH8 in which all harware was found
and up in running in less than an hour. Only took 2 reboots to install is
and update it. And you where saying??

So you have the answer you knew before you first posted. There is no
major OEM that provides Linux on its laptops as standard. Who buys
laptops? Mainly businesses for employees on the move or must take
their work home with them. And what OS do these businessmen use? The
sad fact is there isn't enough of a demand for Linux on laptops. That
will change.

I'm running gentoo on my company Dell Latitude writing
this. Installation was trivial. WLAN connection to the wireless access
point my company gave me so that I could post to COLA while having a
core dump. WLAN access at work when I must attend a meeting and need
access to the company's network.

Even if a major OEM offered Linux on their laptops you would probably
still pay the MS tax. If you buy a laptop with XP Home you still need to
buy XP Pro to use it for business.

To plug Dell the display on this laptop is superb. 1600x1200, it can
do higher, is excellent. And I'm blind in one eye and don't have great
vision in the other. They are the laptop of choice where I work.

None of the major brands want to ship Linux laptops 'cause they dont want
to lose their Windows OEM contract.  So that leaves small time bizs like
EmperorLinux, who will gladly take your order and ship via UPS.

Well, if you're so convinced that it will shit the bed, then why go through
all the effort to buy one?

Hummmm...maybe because you're just a troll?

Why do you want a BIG manufacturer??  Are you stuck on
someones' marketing ploy??

1. Haven't found a satifactory answer to Kppp prob.

I am getting a timeout when trying to connect in kppp.  It says the
interface is down. I have set the modem to ttyS0, and the timeout time
to 120sec.  I have tried Wvdial, but it says the modem does not
respond.  SuSE 6.4 uses ttyS0 and I couldn't get it to connect either.

The modem works fine with Q3 and YDL 1.2.1.  those use cua0.

I am running Q4 on a beige G3/266 128 RAM, Linuxppc Q4
