" Microsoft is one such champion. It has proved itself to be an
outstanding company. Many argue that its programmers have turned out
shoddy programs, but the firm's objective is to make profit, not
superlative programs per se. "

I think that says it all.  In NYC, the mob made millions hauling garbage,
and dumpinng it illegaly. By this criterion, the mob should be listed
along with Albert Einstein, Alan Greenspan, and Bill Gates.

(Apologies to Einstein's daugher, whom I met several times.  Einstein was
truly one of the greatest minds of all time, and should not even be
compared to any of the others.  I know of no one else in modern times
who's thoughts spanned so many areas, who was so influential in world
politics and development, and who was so weighted down with responsibility
for what he helped bring about.)

Greenspan shouldn't be in the list either. He is a gifted economist and has
been very good for the American economy. Microsoft on the other hand have
illegally supressed competition and crushed inovation, as well as providing
the tools to propogate viruses at a much higher rate than ever before.

I don't believe that MS should be forcefully broken up, just stopped from
spreading FUD and pressuring other companies by abusing their monopily
position. Once that is done the OSS community will not need the help of the
DoJ to bring competition back into the marketplace.

I love these two lines:

"So goes the chorus of the sore loser. In athletics, things are
different."

and

"Somehow, we have gotten away from that ideal in the competition
of the marketplace. In commerce, champions are targets."

Microsoft has new competition that they can't buy, steal, FUD to
death, etc. So who's the sore losers now?

Who's crying to the government now for protection from big bad
Open Source and the GPL?

The world has changed Mr. Gates. Change with it or die.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Good * theories can be noted to have the handy property

These paragraphs:

'A Microsoft spokesman confirmed that Microsoft provides funding to the
Alexis de Tocqueville Institution.'

'"We support a diverse array of public policy organizations with which we
share a common interest or public policy agenda such as the de Tocqueville
Institution," the spokesman wrote in an e-mail.'

Andrew Sellgren is an economist.  He cares only about the economy.
He doesn't know beans about business.

You clearly haven't read Rex Ballard's posts, have you? If you had
you'd know that MS corrup^Wpays bonuses to people and organizations
writing articles in their favor.
