Disk space requirements...

Hi y'all! :)

Just thought I would post this interesting little fact...

Just for kicks, I decided to install the entire Slackware distribution on
my /hdb1 partition (1.2 gigs in size)... and what I mean by that is, I
used no prompting, and no tagfiles... I installed EVERYTHING!

I was surprised to find that the entire distribution only took up about
225 Mb of disk space!  Considering what you get with slackware, that is
amazingly tiny!  The MS equivalent could easily be double that amount!

Just blabbin'. :)

That's about right.  I have three 500MB partitions for Linux and one
64MB swap partition.  Each time I install a full slackware, the root
partition is about 45% full after installation.  At work, we have 1GB
drives for HP-UX, and without the addition of the GNU toolset, the
root partition on the workstations is about 55-60% full (over 500MB),
including the Softbench system software.

My MS-DOS partitions include a 300MB C:, 300MB D:, and 200MB E: drives.
the tow 300MB drives are there to hold all the compilers and utilities
one buys for DOS / Windows.  Things like Borland C++ (85MB), Corel Draw
(40-50MB), Office Professional (45-50 MB), etc. add up fast.

I bet it would overflow a 5 GB hard drive if Mega$low developed it,
instead of the 225 MB.

1. Confused about disk space requirements for insalling everything

I've been reading over and over again in the LinuxPPC User Guide that
"if you choose everything, it will consume nearly 1GB."   But when I go
ahead and select all the packages it ends up being over 1.4 GB.  Because
of what it said in the UsersGuide I made my /root partition only (?) 1.4
GB.  Then I went ahead with the install anyway and - no surprise - the
last 50 or so items "failed" to install and when Linux booted up all the
text of the GUI was literally in Chinese.  I guess now I need to start
all over again from the beginning and repartition my drive giving more
space to /root.
Is there something else I'm doing wrong?
Why does the installing everything from the CD require 1.5 GB instead of
the 1GB described in the manual.

Any clarification would be appreciated,
-Josh
