Question about DEC and DEC/ALPHA

Question about DEC and DEC/ALPHA

Post by Chuck Bermingha » Wed, 02 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I have had some conflicting information about DEC.  Maybe someone could
steer me right.

I have the impression, from some quarters, that DEC is out to help Linux
along.  On the other hand,I have information from a former co-worker that
DEC is pushing NT over everything else, and that Linux is of no interest to
them these days.

Any comments, anyone?

DEC, like most (if not all) big companies, has many different groups
within it.  There are those in DEC who promote NT, those who promote DU,
and those who promote Linux.  This is unlike Microsoft, which is
controlled mostly by the whims of a madman.  The NT-promoters seem to be
concentrated in management.  They're not blind to reality, like Gates is.
They're not going to pull the rug out from under those using Unix.  NT for
Alpha isn't used very much.  When it is, it's mostly in x86 emulation.
The Alpha is NT's last holdout of non-x86 platforms and Gates won't let
that one die easily.  He'll keep pumping money into it.

As long as you don't visit their Web page and strictly confine yourself to

bothered about Windows Non-Technology.

I used to work for a company that decided to use the ALPHA and Digital
Unix. When I started migrating the system software, Digital were happy
to let them buy fairly small 'packets' of seat licences, but by the time
I had finished they made these packets much larger (25 seats at a time,
I *think*).
When questioned they advised using Linux for smaller systems (ie, fewer
users) and told us that they had spent quite a bit of effort helping to
get Linux ported to the Alpha.

I suspect the answer you would get (if you asked them) would depend on
which department you went to.

P.S. The above is based *PURELY* on memory and may not be 100% accurate. :-)

In fact, Digital loaned an Alpha box to Linus to help speed along the
Alpha
port, as well as putting some people to the task of porting Linux to the

Alpha.  I have also noticed several people from Digital (from the
porting
team I believe) posting regular traffic on the Linux AXP maling lists.
So,
it appears that Digital still does view the Alpha port of linux as
important,
although they are pushing NT pretty hard.

1. Elm for DEC Alpha DEC Unix

Hi all, I'm currently sysadminning some DEC alpha servers here, and I need to
set up an email system on here. Apparently, none of the elm sources I got were
able to compile successfully. Is there anyone out there who compiled it? Or
can provide a binary? Much appreciated.
