What's the proper alias for the module ppp0? Every attempt of mine to
use a 2.3-series kernel runs up against its' not being able to find this
module. Any hints?
Better to toss a stone at random, then a word.
2.3.13 and later kernels have a new driver, requiring a reasonably
up-to-date pppd; latest is 2.3.10. The README.linux therein tells you that
this new driver requires
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
in /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/conf.modules, if you use old modutils).
I also get the above error message after a ppp connection has been
established with my ISP, specifically after I get my IP address from the
ISP's DHCP server.
Given that I saw other users with different distributions having this
problem (Redhat, Slackware, Debian), and that no one seems to have the
answer so far, what's wrong here??
Using Redhat 6.0, clean install of 2.2.5-15 then upgraded to 2.2.5-22.
Again, I did not have this problem when I used Redhat 5.2 and then
upgrading the kernel to 2.2.x.
