Linux - internet - slip connection

Post by Tom Woma » Fri, 11 Aug 1995 04:00:00

would like some pointers setting up Linux for internet slip connection.

I have kermit compiled for tcp, have netscape that runs but complains about
hosts.
what I've read looks like I need to do some configuring of my re.inet  (other
rc files ?) and /etc/hosts ....
but it's kinda confusing too.

anybody doing net (and web) with slip connection ?

A little help would be great !

You ought to check out the Network Administrator's Guide, available
on sunsite and many fine mirrors.  It covers networking under
Linux in general, and has sections on SLIP in particular.

(Incidentally, this doesn't seem to have a whole lot to do with
the development of the Linux kernel....)

1. PPP/SLIP CONNECTION TO LINUX >> INTERNET

The problem :

I have linux box connected to The Internet with PPP connection. Works
great can ping, telnet, ftp etc out. The Internet world can telnet in
and ftp etc. Host name works great and all aliases.

Now I have set up a dial in ppp and slip ... But once connected I can
reach the internet world by systenm name or number.

/etc/resolv.conf
domain rbsc.com
nameserver 199.1.42.2    <<< my IP's name server

Name server works with nslookup and works great going out on the linux
box. But if I dial in on a slip/ppp line I can't reach the internet world
and can only reach my machine with my assinged IP address 199.1.42.82.

I have tryed:
puser:PASSWD:108:100:PPPUSER:/etc/ppp_sh/ppp_puser

/etc/ppp_sh/ppp_puser
#!/bin/sh
exec /bin/pppd passive modem crtscts 199.1.42.82:129.1.1.50

I have also used -sliplogin program found on sunsite.unc.edu. Exact same
results...

Netscape, always reports HOST not found from the PPP/SLIP dialup same
with ftp, telnet etc.... Any host on the internet is unreachable... even
if I use there IP number not the name.

I have IP fowarding in the Kernel (1.2.2) turned on.

What's the problem? Something I'm missing?

Thanks for any Ideas or comments!!!!
