Console Problems 1.2.13->1.3.83

Console Problems 1.2.13->1.3.83

Post by muec.. » Sun, 07 Apr 1996 04:00:00

    I just bought a NexGen Nx586 P120 motherboard and am having trouble making
X-Windows work under kernel 1.2.13 even though my video card (Diamond Stealth
64 Graphics w/2 Meg DRAM) is recognized.  The screen simply locks up when I run
startx or SuperProbe.  I decided to try a newer kernel to see if it would work.

    Yesterday I downloaded the 1.3.83 kernel, configured and compiled it.  However,
I am having problems making it work correctly.  It appears to boot fine and all
works well until it gets to the point where it would normally go multi-user.  Then
I get the following error messages:

Warning: dev (04:c1) tty->count(2) != #fd's(3) in tty_open
Warning: dev (04:c1) tty->count(2) != #fd's(3) in release_dev

These errors continuously scroll across the screen until I finally have to reboot.
I tried waiting, but it appears they will never go away.

    Is there something else I need to do to upgrade from 1.2.13 to 1.3.83 other than
just obtaining and compiling the kernel?  Is there another version of the kernel
that would be better for upgrade purposes?  BTW, I have read about the necessity
to use the 386 option with NexGen motherboards and have done that.

    Thank you.

    With help from Andries Brouwer, I was able to solve two problems
at the same time.  The problem ended up being my /dev/console.  When I
did a 'ls -l /dev/console', I saw this:

crw--w--w-   2 muecker  users      4, 193 Apr  6 13:57 /dev/console

The real setting should have been this:

crw--w--w-   1 muecker  users      4,   0 Apr  6 13:45 /dev/console

I had to do a 'mknod -m 622 /dev/console c 4 0' after deleting the old
console setting.  Once I did this, I was able to bring up my X-Windows
under both the new and old kernels.

I suffered from the same problem. I found /dev/console and /dev/ttyp1
had the same major and minor device numbers of (4, 193), i.e.:
  # ls -l /dev/console /dev/ttyp1
  crw--w----   2 root     root       4, 193 Apr 11 17:03 /dev/console
  crw-rw-rw-   2 root     root       4, 193 Apr 11 17:03 /dev/ttyp1

Creating a new console device resolved the problem !
  # cd /dev
  # mv console console.BAK
  # mknod console c 4 10
  # chmod 620 console

Note that, the minor device number 10 of this case was unused on my
machine. I don't know this number and this operation are correct, but
I have no problems since that.

1. strange problems 1.2.13 --> 2.0.0 --> 1.2.13

Hi,

I have some strange problems with the new kernel source tree...

after the installation of the new sysvinit-2.62 the linux-2.0.0 kernel
complains sh:/bin/bash cannot execute...
with 1.99.7 this works fine
and at least I'm totally unable to recompile the 1.2.13 source tree due
some strange asm errors in main occurring in asm/io.h referenced by
bugs.h  (also within the asm tree). Of course I checked the appropriate
links to for the linux source tree /usr/include/linux
                                                asm

Please help....
