MAJOR Problems with Kernels above 1.3.97

Post by Gerald L. Ga » Thu, 09 May 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I have tried 1.3.98 and 1.3.99 with the same results, immediately after
booting, I get the following:

kernel: ted_intr: error=0x04
kernel: hdb: unexpected_intr: error=0x04
kernel: hdb: unexpected_intr: status=0x51
kernel: hdb: unexpected_intr: error=0x04
kernel: hdb: unexpected_intr: status=0x51

    ....

These two messages repeat until I hard reset it!!!!

My setup is as follows:

        Pentium-100      24Meg RAM
        CMD640 PCI IDE Controller
                HDA : Conner CFS1275A 1.2Gig
                HDB : Toshiba XM-5302-TA IDE CD-ROM
                HDC : Conner CFS850A  850Meg

I'm sure this is related to the recent "fixing" of some race condition
in the CMD640. Any ideas?

Yes, I have had CMD-640 Chipset support turned on since it
was first offered.  It works fine with kernels 1.3.97 and
below.  Something has changed in 98 that breaks CMD-640,
at least on my machine.

...and 1.3.99 works fine on my machine (A UM8810-PAIO MoBo).

I enable 32-bit disk access and interrupt unmasking for /dev/hda (a WD
AC31200) but not for /dev/hdb (a Mitsumi Fx-400 CD-Rom) because I start
getting timeouts. I also set the multiple block mode to 4 blocks
(I think :).

Alex.

Unfortunately, I don't get the chance to do any kind of configuration
with hdparm or anything.  I get these errors as the kernel is
booting.  Just got patch 100 though, I'll give it a try.

Hi,

Patch 100 fixes the problem!! Everything is working again.
Thanks to all who helped.

1. Kernel 1.3.97 problem

I have just upgraded my system from 1.2.13 to 1.3.97.  This was the
first time I built a kernel, but it went pretty smoothly.

All seems OK, except for the following:

When the system is booting, I get the following:

Enabling swap space
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
May  1 00:44:52 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-4
May  1 00:44:53 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-3
May  1 00:44:53 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-5
May  1 00:44:53 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-4
May  1 00:44:53 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-3
May  1 00:44:53 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-5

I get the same when I do a shutdown.  I have tried to see what is
going on, but can't find the cause.  What on earth is trying to
load these (non-existent) modules?

In addition, although I have upgraded to the latest version of sysVinit,
the system does not always shutdown properly.

Any help will be gretly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Michael Ben-Gershon
