HOWTO: get core dumps

Post by Bruce Park » Sat, 27 May 1995 04:00:00

First, I've read the FAQ. But it did not make clear how
I can recompile the kernel to get core dumps.

Could someone spell it out to me?

Thanks.

Don't know how to change the default, but you could put this in your
.cshrc or /etc/csh.cshrc or whatever:

    limit coredumpsize unlimited

Enter

  unlimit coredumpsize

in for tcsh or

  ulimit -c unlimited

for bash.

You don't need to recompile your kernel.  Just type
        ulimit -c unlimited
to bash or the equivalent for the shell you use.  You can also put this
to /etc/profile or whatever.

The command:
   ulimit -c unlimited
will remove the size limitation as a one-off.  You might like to put
the command into your ~/.bash_profile or your ~/.profile

Similarly,
   ulimit -a
will list all your current limits.

Try
   man ulimit
for more info

1. dump core or not dump core

Howdy,

Some of my programs dump core, others don't. I tried
it on RedHat 6.1 and Mandrake 7.0 with kernels 2.2.14
and 2.2.15. I tried tcsh and bash with coredumpsize
set to 1GB. It seems to be application specific.

Is there any other criteria when suppressing apart from
the type of signal and the size limitation?
The application that doesn't dump core contains signal
handlers for some signals, but not for SEGV or ABRT.
