Q: Linux & AGP any code written yet?

Q: Linux & AGP any code written yet?

Post by Lahaye Olivie » Sat, 25 Oct 1997 04:00:00

        Hello,

I'm planing to buy a AGP2 Pentium II Based PC. (440LX)
It will be equiped with ATI 3D Expert 8Mb

What I'd like to know (I was unable to find the answer in
HOWTO / Commercial-HOWTO / yahoo / FAQ / dejanews / ...) is:

 - Is there any code written yet for AGP support (even in beta kernels)
 - If not, is it planed for next months?
 - If yes, would I be able to use my ATI 3d as a simple vga board or
   a simple ati 2d board?
 - If vga mode aren't accessible, at least, will I be able to have a
   text mode?

For the future,

 - Is it planed that this gfx board be supported by:
        * XFree *.*
        * Metro-X or any commercial X- Servers.
        * Mesa (just like the 3dfx is)

Thanks a lot for any answers.

I can't comment as far as the graphics board is concerned, but you will
almost undoubtably be able to access both text and SVGA modes.

I have a 440LX m'board with an AGP card installed.  I have X running at
800x600x256.. I'm waiting for direct support for my card.

Xi Graphic's AcceleratedX Version 4.1 has
support for the Number Nine Revolution 3D
AGP Video card and the Millennium II AGP
server should be out next week. The Millennium
II gets over 36 Xmarks!

1. Yet another case of Microsoft not writing good OS code.

-snip-

Ahh, there's your problem.  Windows 95 OSR2 is really DOS with a
windowing system running on top of it, with a couple of protected
mode drivers loaded to access the extended memory.  100 bucks
isn't very much money to be spending on an OS, so you're getting
a souped up version of DOS.

Now, if you want a real OS, you have to spend $700 in order to
get Windows NT.  Windows NT is a real OS, and is much better than
Win95, a glorified version of DOS.  Plus, Windows NT was
developed by some of the brightest software minds in the
multiverse, instead of a bunch of high-school hackers and
hobbyists...  that's how Linux was developed.  Isn't Windows NT
the greatest piece of software you've ever seen in your life?
Now, if UNIX were only as good.  UNIX is very outdated, because
it doesn't support 4 NIC's + 4 processors like Windows NT.
