Any hint for running CAP (appletalk file server) ?

Post by Patrick Duv » Wed, 07 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

any hint/pointer on the best way to run the CAP software on Linux ?
(appletalk file server from the Columbia University Appletalk Package)
Possible ways to go are:
- kernel support (a la BSD4.3), or
- application server (using a /dev/nit packet filter interface)

(e-mail preferred, I will summerize the answers).

Patrick.

IMHO you will find netatalk to be a better package. It is significantly
faster, easier to set up. It requires kernel patches (included) for all
kernels before the 1.3 series, but if you have a 1.3 kernel, its just
compile & go.

I have to agree with this.  Netatalk way back ehrn under 1.3.2x was just
a wet dream to get up.  I was on an all Mac campus with my lonely Linux
box, and all of my compsci buddies were jsut eating up having bash
accounts and co-sysadmin'ing on web, etc.

Then we got netatalk up in a day, and WHAMMO!  We could file transfer
from/to macs with appleshare, print .ps docs on laserwriters, etc.  It
drove the administration nuts that we were such show-offs with it.

I never get tired of telling this story, do I?

Anyway, give netatalk a try; I hear it's gotten even better in the months
interim.

1. CAP server software and Appletalk...?

Has anyone tried CAP-6.0 on Linux?  I am considering using it, but do not have
space on my hard drive.  If it's worth it though, I'll make some space. =)
Also, is anyone aware of any Macintosh related software that will run on
Linux?  I'm looking for something that will provide an Appletalk connection
or that will emulate a Mac.

E-mail any info to my address, as I don't normally read this group.
