X support for Cirrus in X11R6.1G?

Post by Skip Livingst » Sat, 05 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Is there support for the Cirrus 5434 chipset in the new
X11R6.1G release for 16bpp and 32bpp? I cannot seem to get it to
work unless I only put it 8mb of RAM :( . I can't live with only eight.
Does anyone know if it is supported or another way to get around the
linear addressing problem? That is the "must have <14mb to run X
in linear addressing mode/option".

I have a cl5434 and 16MB of ram, and I can run 16bpp fine, (with the
exception of some screen flicker when the cursor moves).  However, I
hav the PCI version of the card.  According to the Xfree docs, the ISA
version cannot remap the linear framebuffer above 16MB.  This sounds
like the problem you are having.

I have the PCI version of the cl5434 also.  I can use 16bpp at all
resolutions.  According to the documentation that came with my card, the
controller can support 32bpp at the lowest resolution (640x480).
However, XFree86 claims it cannot support 32bpp at any resolution.
I just don't think it's implemented yet (and for that resolution, it's
hardly worth it either).

1. Genoa 8500VL (Cirrus 5428 chipset) lockup in X11R6 unless BitBLT disabled

My Genoa 8500 VL vesa video card with 2MB memory locks up during X
startup.  I get the first textured screen and then some or all of the
blue screen and at some (not consistent) point it will lock up
everything.  No keystrokes are recognized including ctrl-alt-delete
and ctrl-alt-backspace.  Setting Option "no_bitblt" fixes the problem
but at the expense of losing bitblt.  My machine is a 100mhz AMD DX4
with award bios, 20mb ram.  Slowing the machine down does not help.
Inserting a vesa wait state does not help.  Any input would be greatly
appreciated.  Thanks in advance!
