strange string in "last" output

Post by Jeff Templo » Tue, 25 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

Sometimes, on one of our machines here (Linux, now running RedHat 5.1
but the same behaviour was seen under RedHat 5.0), the following
sort of line will appear in the output of the "last" command:

where most lines are of the form

clinton  ttyp6        :0.0             Sat Aug 22 14:50 - 14:50  (00:00)

anybody have any idea what's going on?  Never saw anything like this
before upgrading to RedHat 5.0, and it may well be that it happened
even after the upgrade to 5.0 and just escaped notice.

                                        JAT

ps: please send an email copy of your response if you don't mind.

You probably have some libc.so.5 based binary on your system that writes
to /etc/wtmp ... Find out which one that is, recompile it under glibc and
delete /etc/wtmp (i.e. start a new one)

1. strange output of "who am I" & "last" on solaris 9

OS:
%  uname -a
SunOS sunbox-1 5.9 Generic_117171-09 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-2
ssh on Solaris 9 comes with the OS.

When I tried to "ssh" from another machine (Soalris 7 + OpenSSH)
to it, the output of "who am i" and "lst" is strange, the IP address
part is weird.

%  who am i
tom       pts/3        Oct  8 13:54    (t?)

%  last |more
tom   pts/3        t?             Fri Oct  8 13:54   still logged in

When I tried to ssh from another Solaris 9 (ssh comes with OS),
the IP address part is missing in the output of "who am i" and "last":
%  who am i
tom       pts/1        Oct  8 14:00

%  last |more
tom      pts/1                         Fri Oct  8 14:00   still logged in

Any idea?

Thanks.
